Using 4R100 bypass and 3/8" lines in an E4OD
Howdy all,
I apologize if this has been asked before but a search (here) didn't produce any results! (I also posted this over in the "trans" section and no one responded....so I hope there's more interest here!!) There seems to be a fair amount of people installing the 4R100 fluid bypass/check valve, fittings and 3/8" cooler lines on E4OD's. The 4R100 (3/8" fittings) bypass seems readily available and fairly inexpensive. I don't have a integral radiator trans-cooler in my OE Radiator........(seems they didn't put auto-transmissions in 55 F-600's) So, I'll use a stand-alone (big) DERALE remote cooler/fan with an inline filter etc....... There's also a check valve in the return fitting of E4OD's that is there to (presumably) prevent fluid siphoning out of the TC and I assume that the 4R100 bypass & banjo fittings do the same. Has anyone here done the 4R100 bypass in an E4OD and changed to 3/8 lines and fittings? Is it worth doing it? (Do we really even need the bypass?) I haven't plumbed anything yet, and since I haven't even made up all the cooler lines, I can go either way.....It makes sense to use larger lines in any case...... Thanks, Rick |

The bypass is a pressure relief valve. There is no thermostat in the bypass. If the cooler plugs the bypass opens and keeps fluid flowing to the rear of the trans where it is used for lube. If you remove the bypass and the cooler plugs you don't have any lube to the rear of the trans. You'll be replacing the trans after that because there won't be enough usable parts left to rebuild it. If you remove the ball in the check valve all the fluid will flow through the bypass all the time and almost nothing will go to the coolers. The bypass does not help the trans warm up, it is only there to insure that there is always lube to the rear of the trans. It's rare for the bypass to fail. It's not rare for a cooler to get restricted, and then the bypass opens. When that happens the trans runs hot and a lot of people replace the bypass. That's not the problem, the restricted cooler is the problem. Now the only question is does this bypass work on an E4OD (fittings the same size)? |

It took me a while but I finally found your other post from several years ago. I couldn't find anything in the "Transmissions....." section. A google search finally found your post from before! Someone else just tried an EBay bypass to replace the one on their 4R100. It didn't fit. I don't know if this is the same seller or not, but be careful with really cheap knockoff parts.

Yeah I picked up a bypass from ford for 55$ and it worked great plus it’s oem |
Just got the bypass today and it fits perfectly. :-X22
Anyone know what the torque should be for the banjo fittings? Aluminum washers and steel banjo bolts screwed into an aluminum cast case........................It's not going to be much or you strip the thread! Now all I need to do is get the filter and cooler mounted and plumbed. All is good! Cheers, Rick |
