You appear to have a 1966 Mercury 250 that was sold new in Alberta or maybe Saskatchewan. The bottom right number is the domestic special order DSO A66562 and since it is 6 characters long the truck was special ordered. The colour is blank which makes it a special order and there is now way to tell what the original collur was. You will have to take a piece of the colour into a paint supply store where they might be able to put it under the scope and reproduce it.

I'm going to hazard a guess that the small number 5 on the secondary plate attached to the cowl is the color - a 1966 Ford Mustang color - Signal Flare Red.

I agree with Chad about the "5".

Is the truck described as a Mercury on the ownership? I ask because I've never seen a body buck tag on a '66 Mercury.

It has lot been registered since 1989. I don't see why it would not be listed as a mercury as that is the make andb250 as the model. Canadian alberta truck mercury was here for a while.

I am positive that the very early 66 Merc I had in the 90's had a cowl tag on it just like this truck. Maybe it only got one if it was a 6 character DSO?

Sorry I am not really sure what you are saying here . Are you saying it will be registered as a ford truck ? I am just not sure what you are trying to say about my post.

Sorry, my mind wandered off the topic to the DSO thing.
Your question about the colour interests me because I think my truck is that unusual red also. Mine has a code of "J" for Rangoon Red but looked almost orange when I got it and I thought it was Poppy Red. After a sanding and a coat of Penetrol, it looks red, but certainly not Rangoon Red. I see yours looks orange in the under-hood shot. Maybe give it a good polish and park it next to a Rangoon Red truck to see the difference more clearly.

From 1946 to 1965 all Mercury trucks on the warranty plate were identified as a Mercury. These plates do NOT look like the American warranty plates. In 1966 the auto PAC agreement was in place and the Mercury truck was phased out by 1968. In 1966 FoMoCo declared all warranty plates had to coincide with the American made plates and subsequent codes. Therefore there is limited ability to prove if a truck in 1966 was born a Ford or Mercury. The definitive proof is the registration and also to a large degree the DSO. A DSO that starts with the letter A designates a Lincoln Mercury dealer whereas the letter B designates a Ford dealer. There have been some reported cases of a Ford dealer delivering a Mercury truck to remote regions of the Yukon or N.W.T. Marti reports are from 1967 to 2002 only thus making a 1966 the most challenging truck to identify :). We are hoping that no one simply bolted on the Mercury pieces in place of the Ford pieces.
