Fuel pump post mortem

After my recent drive using cruise control at 75mph I felt the trans unlock the converter trying to accelerate up an incline which knowing the road as I do shouldn't have happened. I have a scan gauge which gives fuel flow in gals per hour. It wouldn't read above 5.12gph. I have now 520k miles on my second fuel pump so figured a replacement due. Pulled pump and opened screen sock filter to find small particles blocking pump intake. It's hard to see how is sucked these particles into the pump screen through the filter sock. I replaced with a new Walbro pump. I did a fuel press test with snap throttle before pulling the pump. Pump was not noisey. Interested if anyone else pulled the sock off the pump to inspect pump intake.

I replaced my pump a few months ago, and did not find any crud buildup on the pump. But I have another car with a steel gas tank that did corrode severely, and I found very fine dirt that got past both the sock and the two filters I had installed, ending up in the bottom of the carburetor bowl. It was like a layer of mud, a lot of which got sucked into the passages and had to be blown out with carb cleaner.

I would try to find out why your tank got those particles.
