Tire shop SCRATCHES all 4 oem Platinum wheels...
Not a happy camper today... Went to get my Toyo open country at2 extreme tires installed today at America's Tire (the location was convenient) and they ended up scratching all four wheels with their machine. I let them know and they acknowledged that is was their mistake and now we play the waiting game. My sales guy offered some free aftermarket rims, which all looked like crap btw, and i told him i want a new set of OEM platinum wheels. He said he will do some research and "talk to his guy". I told him to keep me posted but will give him a call tomorrow and see what's going on. Honestly, i kind of saw this coming, a bunch of teens running around the shop installing tires, they give zero ****s about your car and how much you paid for it. This will be the last time i take any of my cars to America's Tire, truly disappointing.
Has anyone run into a similar problem before or have any advice on how i can handle this moving forward. First time this happens to me personally. I'll keep you all posted during this process. Let me know. Thanks in advance. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...0536bbf4a3.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...3b8559ae55.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...e10326b9c3.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...b023045c5b.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...457d6027b5.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...8eeb6622fb.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...7875ba5b94.jpg |
I hope they started by not charging you for install:-X09

Gonna go out on a limb and guess your a better man than me. I know if it were me I would have lost my marbles on everyone in the place. |
I had a shop do this once. They ended up buying three new rims. |
Been there with a late model Porsche just to save a few hundred on a tire set. Settled on a healthy discount on the tires, but still had a scratched rim. Got rid of the car, but....
I'm getting ready to sell another Pcar and took the wheels off to detail the wheel wells/calipers etc.. Windy day and soapy rim didn't go well.. Blast of wind and the front wheel blew over onto it's face chipping the powder coat badly. Just called a local shop today which specializes in Harley stuff to check into getting it refinished. Checked their ratings and all good. They quoted about $120.00 to blast and re-powder coat per rim. Mount/balance extra of course, but what I was fearing was going to be a $500.00 bill, turned out to be not-to-bad. |
Let me guess, they left all the PSA tape adhesive from the old wheel weights as well... ?
|
Funny thing is i didn't even buy the tires from them.. I ordered them on Amazon, knowing that if i wasn't satisfied, i would have no problem returning them.
I haven't really inspected the weights, thankfully you cant really see all that much of them due to the wheel design. |
There's an easy and good answer: You should find a highly rated, high end wheel repair company like one that services the German brands and have them give you a quote for taking the wheels off, refinishing them exactly like stock and putting them back on. Then give that receipt to your tire shop and have them agree to pay the bill (not reimburse you).
There are wheel repair shops (some are mobile and will come to you) that can fix wheels far more damaged than yours. Your wheels should be an easy fix! Good luck |
Do your rims have a clear coat on them? I know mine do. If so there's no aftermarket process to replace the clear coat AFAIK. You'd have to get new Ford factory rims. Even the Alcoa rims don't come with the clear coat.

Good luck Either way, i wont settle for anything less than either a brand new set of OEM wheels or them covering all repair costs for the current wheels. |

Hmm, The cost of the Oem, you can get a really nice set of aftermarket and maybe have some cash to spare. Then you can get your polished if you ever want to sell with factories. If they dont do what you want, ask for there insurance carrier info. |
I forgot to mention, the sales guy tried to tell me that it wasn't a scratch but instead the wheel paste that they used. I told him to go get a towel and some kind of degreaser, which he did, and once he cleaned one of the surfaces i told him to run his finger/nail across the line and tell me what kind of paste that was lol.. He was very professional thou and apologetic, one of the reasons i held my **** together and didn't call them out in front of all the customers and instead took him outside and showed him.

Looks to me like they don't have the newer, and proper, type of tire machine for these newer wheels. The old style was just a bar you'd insert between tire and rim, once the bead was broken. The newer style tire machine has a bearing that rides along the rim, protecting it from being scratched up. I just learned about this recently, as I haven't operated a tire machine in 25+ years. Sure hope you hold them accountable and get your wheels replaced.
