Roof repair 56 F100 Help Please..
Wow I didn't realize how bad the roof was until I finished the bottom of the cab and set it on floor. Basically the entire roof skin is detached from the drip rail. I really don't want to fix this now, but need to do something. If I drive this thing as is I could see air flow bending it up and really making a mess. I'm afraid it is too much for self leveling RV type sealer, which is what I thought I would do earlier. I'm afraid to take a wire wheel to it as I think it would go inches up in the top with nothing left to attach to. What do you guys think?https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...95abc8e3d8.jpg

X brace the cab, and order a new roof and drip rails. Expensive, but worth it.............I didn't, and I have WEEKS invested in mine.....

There is a section of the roof, there is the inner structure, then the J shaped driprail, and finally the cab roof comes over it and is spot welded with a bazillion spots all around. Along the back you need to use a seam buster to break them loose. That roof project is not going to be easy. New or repair looks like a project either way. Maybe find a donor roof in better condition? Regards, Chris |
I know you said you really don't want to fix it now, but any temporary patchwork you do will make a proper repair later that much harder. Personally, as big of a pita it will be to do, I'd say it's better to do it now than wait 'til later. You won't regret the decision.

I ran into this problem with my 56. After two donor roofs and my cab in the shop for 15 months, I wish I’d have done two things. First fixed the roof first and 2nd bought a new steel (or fiber glass) roof. What’s your plans for your truck? If RestoMod you could remove the drip rails. There are several here on FTE that have done that. |

The idea of the truck originally was going to be a old usable truck that a kid would have got running in the 80's or so. " Dad gave me this old truck with a bad engine, so I'm going to put a 300 six in it and use it". Not really a "Rat Rod" that is made to look bad but just a old truck that looks like it is, complete with bad paint. etc. But floor was swiss cheese and corners were bad and I fell into the MAW trap. Now bottom of cab is done and I have too much involved in it to quit now. I guess it is more CQN ( cant quit now) rather than MAW. By the way, How is your wife doing, BJ?

Greg, Thanks for asking. She just got her two month CT Scan. We’ll get the results Monday. She has her good & bad days but in general she’s doing pretty good. Your dilemmais pretty common, thus the recommendation to do the roof first. Not sure what BigWin56f100 wants for the cab but it’s very easy to get several thousand wrapped up in the repair of a bad cab and doors. |

for the people who have to pay for panel replacements in parts and labor, a rust free expensive cab is in their best interest to move the project along in a quicker fashion |
