transmission cooler swap done

Did the swap.. the new cooler is twice the size of the old one.. I put the raybrsto magnetic filter on the return line and it all went in easy. Took about 1 1/2 hrs didn’t even take the bumper off.. going to test her tomorrow.. how much more fluid should I expect to add considering the bigger cooler..

I don't think that I added more than a quart, but it was awhile back.

I out about 3/4 qt in.. seems to hold the temp at *150

hydro man 17 03-14-2018 10:55 AM

150* is about the bottom of the desired minimum temp. I believe that design temp is ~175* - 180*. Might want to look into the Derale thermostat.

A few questions...

StrokinHer01 03-17-2018 08:08 AM

Until I get a thermostat put in the trans can I pinch the hot hose with some vice grips or put in a ball valve and keep it open just a little bit till it warms up?? Also is it bad that the thermostat blocks fluid flow? When I was changing my cooler someone told me not to stack the 6.0 cooler with my 7.3 cooler to prevent flow issues...also my transmission gauge says it gets up to 150 after driving for a bit at 35-40 ambient temperature . Is that enough to evaporate any condensation? And how does the whole condensation thing and transmission fluid work? Like does it collect moisture the whole time you drive or just during warm up?

If you go with the Derale thermostat I recommend the 1/2" one. Others have reported that the 3/8" version is too restrictive.

Don't pinch the lines shut or restrict it with a ball valve. Stacking coolers will cause a flow restriction that will decrease your cooling. If you have a large cooler and no thermostat placing a piece of cardboard over the cooler in cold weather is a better solution.

Condensation happens inside a transmission because it needs to be vented to the atmosphere. Air has moisture in it. When a warmed up transmission cools the air inside the transmission contracts and fresh air is drawn into the trans through the vent. The moisture in the air will condense into liquid water if the inside of the trans cools enough. Over multiple warm up/cool down cycles you can accumulate a fair bit of water. Getting the trans up to 150°F or more has been shown to drive out the moisture.

Ok cool. So as long as I keep it at 150 without a ton of start up shut downs it should be ok for now? I plan on getting a thermo installed I just have to go pull some cars out of the ditch in this damn 2 feet of snow... and I just installed a 6.0 cooler as I won’t have any Time to do so in the coming weeks... so I’m gonna wrap the cooler in cardboard then I guess ha this could be called the homeless mod or tweaker mod...

When I lived in Michigan my trans cooler had cardboard over it all winter long.

This is his is what I’m driving through so to those who say big lifts and huge tires are pointless and dumb,
those are the people I am passing when they’re stuck
in a ditch or even just on the road
so ya there are reasons for my choice of truck
but I drov around today and the trans got just
a little over 180 but was hard to keep it at that temp because I was
in 4x4 when it got that warm..
it never went below 150 though https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...6297fa650.jpeg

In the winter I put on my stock cooler and when it starts to warm up I put the 6.0 cooler on

StrokinHer01 03-18-2018 04:58 PM

That’s just too much for me ha just going to spend the $45 on the thermostat
