advice on my 6.0! Keep it or upgrade?
 

So I bought my 2006 f 250 6.0 for 11.5. Not 2 weeks later i notice a good oil leak to find out that my oil cooler was out. that was 1100. then couple weeks later my stc fitting on high pressure pump goes out. 700 dollars. I'm looking at 1800 before the first payment. I love the truck but my question is should i just cut my losses and trade for a newer 250? i can find a xlt 2016 for 35 to 40,000.

If you’re having those issues and you bought it for 11.5 please get rid of it. No bullet proof kit?? Sell it don’t look back!! There are a lot more issues that go wrong on those than is normal. Some get lucky but others don’t and those problems you explain are the same symptoms a lot of em have

STC fitting and oil cooler are common repair items on a 2006 6.0. Sorry for being blunt, but it sounds like you may have bought more truck than you can afford.

There is no such thing as a "bulletproof" 6.0. Maintenance is the key and if you have to pay someone to maintain it you will need deep pockets.

all used ford trucks are susceptible to repair problems. 6.0 have expenseive bills, but later 6.4 and 6.7 have even more expenseive bills.

best bet would be to go gasser v-10

if you have to have a diesel, best bet, buy new or something that has "a ford" extended warranty.

dont settle for the various fly by night warranties .

I bought my used truck 2 years ago for 37K, owe 15K on it, I put 10K into it on reliability and repair type improvements.....and thats not including turbo work which I might need...fuel pump which could crap out at no notice, lifters which could grnade anytime. My someday list includes an engine rebuild.

there's a reason that diesel 6.0L fords go for super cheap on the used market.
their reputation precedes them...

best advice I have..."Research" before purchase... all brands.

I spent 6 months researching before I got a 2012 Ford F250 2 years ago.. Gas for me.
as others have said.. the 6.0 is not a good engine.. Period. but a few good one are around. yours is not one of them. Sadly .

with Turbo and EPA stuff.. get an extended warranty if staying with diesel...
I personally do not like extended warranties.. but for a diesel. its needed...

Sounds like you’re a candidate for a new, low option gas 6.2 truck with a warranty.

Old trucks with higher mileage cost a lot to keep on the road. Old Diesel trucks cost even more.

Where might that used market be?

I traded a F350 2006 6.0. It actually wasn't bad for many years with none of the well known 6.0 injector problems, etc, but then it started developing oil leaks and fuel leaks.


Ford wanted to pull the engine and do about $5,000 worth of work on it. I don't think so.. I could just image it would never run again or I would live at the service shop.


So I traded it for a 2016 F450 6.7. I was really really leaning towards a new Dodge, but the reviews were very good on the 6.7. To do over again... Shrugs... I could go with the Dodge, but this F450 is very nice and no problems.


19 months later.. The 2016 6.7L with 22,500 has NO problems. Not one time in the shop. Very nice truck.. I do think Dodge has the better interior on the 2016 and now I like the Ford 2017 even better than the Ford 2016.


This is from someone who is in the truck everyday and everyday it is on the roads.


To me, it's durability (tough, rugged, long lasting) and reliability (Always there, always dependable, trust and assurance)... Cost, brand, etc are second


It doesn't matter about the make, model or cost if you can't depend on it, or it's in the dealer's driveway more than yours.

I agree here, used diesels or out of warranty diesels are just not worth the risk these days.

Sell the POS!

A good friend of mine just paid 14.5 for a 2006 F250 4X4 reg cab 6.0l after my suggestions fell on deaf ears. Truck was BP'd last year. He calls me 3 days after signing the papers and says 'I think I have a blown head gasket along with an oil leak'. Gonna be $3500 minimum to get it back on the road. And then he says 'I am going to keep it after I get it fixed'.:-roll :-X19

I have a 15 6.7 and it runs perfect. It is however expensive to maintain. Fuel filter change at 30,000 miles. Oil changes at $200. I only use synthetic oil because it's just better IMO. I have about 50,000 miles without any motor issues. I have towed a 13,000# 5th wheel for 26,000 of those miles so I have worked it hard and it just keeps on going. Fuel millage isnt bad for a truck this size.
Hope you figure out what to do with your 6.0
