1965 F100 Standard cab front bumper mounting bolts

Hi fellas. I'm having an OEM 1965 front bumper powder coated next week. I'm wondering if the front bumper mounting bolt heads were painted to match the bumper back in '65?

Hardware number is 23472-S8 - the S8 indicates Zinc (dark silver).

I also have a book with an amazing number of factory photos. Any painted bumpers have the bolts visible and are the silver color.

It was being discussed here so I bought a copy.

I actually remember that thread now thanks

Fords & Whalers 02-05-2018 11:39 AM

I believe the originals are 7/16-14 in. thread and 1.25in. length carriage bolts with a smooth head. Does anyone have a source for these Zinc Plated bolts that have a smooth head? The "replacement" bumper bolts have a smooth head, but have polished stainless heads or chrome plated heads. Off the shelf zinc plated bolts have stamped letters and ridges, and I'd like to keep as close to original as possible.

Thanks Bill. Looks like the original part number is C0AB 17758-A. Interesting that the description is "oval head" instead of "carriage".

I believe that part number is for the Chrome bolts used with what they are calling the Deluxe front bumper.

For the painted front bumper they used 23472-S8 according to the illustration section. See same text page as posted but look up a ways under Front Bumper - about 8 down from the top.

Also, Carriage bolts are often referred to as oval head - what other kind of oval head bolt can be torqued down other than carriage bolts?

This page might help you some.

Ahh. Thanks Chad, that's what you posted a while ago and I didn't put two and two together. The "carriage" description for 23472-S8 is what got me wondering if there was a difference. When I was looking at replacements I came across a c.1965 mustang bumper bolt that had a unique description:

\
Part # C4ZB-17758-A. BUMPER BOLTS The best bumper bolt on the market! Correct "button" head profile. Silver zinc with wax coating to extend plating life. Reduced shoulder height allows nut to seat properly.
