Oil questions
hi guys. Quick question for someone who knows more than me. I recently rebuilt a 460 for my ‘89. The machine shop had me break it in with 20w50 with zinc for the cam. I am at the point where I would like to put the oil in it that I’ll be using for regular use. The shop recommended 15w40 but all I can find says diesel on it. Does anybody have any insight to this or is it ok to use the oil that says diesel on it? Or should I use a different weight?

Been using 15/40 Rotella in my '87 4.9 and '94 Dodge Ram V-10 for years. Has lots of good detergents and anti-wear agents in it. I use either Rotella T5 or Delo XLE 10/30 diesel oil in both my cars, a Grand Marquis with a 4.6 and a Sonata with a 2.4. All are spotless inside the engine and I get great service out of a superior oil for my engines.
Today's auto oils do not have the additives needed for older flat tappet engines. |
Thanks brother. I guess I’ll go for it then.

X2....Diesel oil still has plenty of zinc in it so the flat tappet cam and lifters will survive.

I've been running 10W30 Rotella in my '97 F350/460 for about the last 110K miles. It only uses/leaks a little over a pint to a 3K oil change. Still sounds nice and tight, runs great.

I don't have much experience with the 460 but I run 15w40 diesel oil in my Jeep 4.0 because it has a flat tappet cam.

I ran Chevron Delo 15w40 in my grandpap's old LeSabre for close to 10 years. It was spotless inside and ran excellent. I'd still have it if the car around it didn't rust apart.
