79 F150 4x4, AC/Heat Install
 

Hey,
My truck had Heat/AC at one time but the H.coil and AC compressor have been removed. Does anyone know what I will have to do to repair and how much, $$$?

TWO different types of A/C combined with the heater.

1) Factory installed integral A/C combined with the heater, the A/C controls are in the same panel as the heater controls. Huge evaporator case located at right rear of engine compartment.

2) Deluxe dealer installed A/C combined with the heater. The two A/C switches are located in the HUGE dash bezel that sweeps across the entire right side of the dash, covering up the glove box.

There is a separate "hang-on" glove box bolted to the bottom of the dash.

There is another type of A/C, but it's not combined with the heater.

In general, you would first need to make sure the heater/AC box itself is functional. That usually means pull it and fix as needed. Clean and leak test the evaporator is high on the list. Also might as well change the heater core if not done recently while it is out.

Then the engine and condenser side. While I am sure it is possible to rebuild with OE type parts a conversion to R134 and more efficient Sanden style compressor would help a lot with effectiveness, reliability and ongoing cost. New receiver/dryer and new hoses. Maybe new condenser in front of the radiator. Cost, as a guess is $1,000 to $3,000 depending on how you shop, original condition and how much you can do yourself. AC is labor and parts intensive! Don't ask me how I know.
