EFI 460 in 78 F250

as for installing the engine itself is simple, the wiring harness is simple, the fuel system can be tricky, I have personally done this swap into my '79 Bronco

93.5-97 heads have bigger valves other than that they are the same. The heads will be needed because they are different than carb heads. Also you will need to change the timing gears to runs straight up timing.

i-Alone, what fuel milage do you get with the F.I.?

Danger ranger, do a search. There's a pile of posts on this subject.
What you will most likely need is a Donor truck!

i_alone 10-26-2003 08:50 AM

I've never realy tried to calculate it, I'd say along the lines of 12 m.p.g

Thudpucker 10-26-2003 11:40 AM

THat's not enough I_Alone! I was hoping an EFI conversion on the 460 would net something up in the 18-20 Mpg range.

I'm ready to make a swap with somebody. I'd give them my 460 en-toto for their 300 Six. I need more fuel milage if I'm to keep this truck.

never have I heard of a 460 getting anywhere near 18-20, the best bet, like you said is a 300 I6, or even a 302, but then you have nothing for power, and when you start to work them with mods you get HP but you lose mileage

Thudpucker 10-26-2003 12:16 PM

My trips from here to Anchorage are getting to be expensive.
The fuel cost for the 460 is in the neighborhood of $800 where the same trip with a 300 six would be just over $300. And the Six will pull my 7000# boat if it's necessary although I usually borrow my son's 73 F-250/360/C-6 though. So much power, and so reliable.

That 460 will get mpg into the upper 11's if I keep from stabbing it. Cruise control will add another mile to the gallon too. 35#'s of air in the tires will help but it's a little noisey that way.
However going through British Columbia, Yukon Territory and the Alaska Hiway it's not possible to get over 8-9Mpg. The roads are such that you are on/off the gas way too often. F.I. would definatly help on that trip. I never get tired of making that trip.

yeah, the FI will help, becasue your fuel is metered better into the engine, now when I finish doing a few mods to my wiring harness/engine, I hope to be getting a little bit better mileage, as I will be going to SEFI from bank fire, and also putting in Mass Air instead of Speed Density, which should help a MPG or 2
