Advice on a 1940 pickup....
 

I have been thinking about purchasing a pickup and ran across a nice looking '40 Ford from KC Classic Auto in Lenexa KS.
I am new to trucks so I thought I would post the link and see if I can get some thoughts from others who are more knowledgeable. I am thinking the price is rather high but I'm certainly no expert. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

This 1940 Ford Pickup Truck is Awesome and also runs Awesome!!! It has been top to bottom restored with an all steel body, boxed 1940 Ford Frame, TCI front end with rack and pinion steering, Power disc brakes, Southern Rods Air Conditioning, new wiring, dolphin gauges, Flowmaster exhaust, and so much more. All that is powered by a strong 383 Stroker V8 with Keith Black pistons, Erson cam, Competition roller rockers, High volume oil pump, and fed by a Edlebrock 750cfm carb. Connected to a Turbo 350 Automatic with B and M shift kit mated to a 9in for rearend with 3.0 gears. This truck drives really nice on almost new tires. $44,900.

I'll give you my input on the truck you're looking at. For the price, you would not be able to build a comprable vehicle. Looks like it's a pretty nice truck, very well done, and even though it's got a Chevy motor, at least it's not another 350. The truck has a lot of very nice work done, nice parts put into it, I think it's very well executed. If you're looking for a turnkey vehicle, I think you got a pretty good shot with that truck right there. I would contact the dealer and ask them if they would be able to get you in touch with the shop or person who built the truck, that way you can a bit more information. If I had the money, and was looking for a nice street rod like that, I would definitely consider that truck there that you found. Good luck, and let us know what happens.

Sounds like a well built truck and you could' t have one built for that. But the Chevy engine will be a deal breaker for most of us. Ford guys hate seeing that and it will make it harder to every sell.

As stated in the previous posts you couldn't build it for the asking price but the market for turn key vehicles depends on finding the right buyer. If you can't check out the vehicle in person find an independent appraiser not connected with the seller and get a detailed report. Also check out the dealer with the DMV to make sure he's legit. Don't know if it matters to you but with a turn key vehicle such as this people will tend to refer to it as the builder's truck. JMO.

The street rod market is really saturated right now. Way more sellers than buyers.
Have you looked at comparable trucks? Dealer price will be much higher than private party IMO......
I'd offer $35k for that one, unless you have money to burn

Thanks for the reply's. I am a bit concerned with the truck having a Chevy engine, too. I also recognize that the dealer is certainly going to ask for top dollar. I was thinking the same as Tinman and offer $35k and see what their response is. I am in no hurry to buy so I can take my time. Thanks for the input.

Watch some of the auctions on tv. Muscle cars are about the hottest thing right now but I've seen some great 30s 40s and 50s stuff go at bargain basement prices. If you go to Mecham's during the week days, you would be amazed what you can buy for under $25,000

I have also been looking for a 1940/41 Ford pickup. I've also been looking at 1935/36/37 5 window coupes as well. The pickup you are showing has been out there for a pretty good while for sale. It's a nice looking pickup but there are plenty more that are just as nice for less money. As mentioned above you are better off looking on Craigslist, ebay, etc. as the dealers are looking to turn a fast buck to make money so the price is driven up. Also watch as the same truck can be listed in different states with a Hugh price difference. I have my 1937 Ford pickup for sale and dealers have contacted me wanting to help sale my pickup. All they do is jack the price up so both party's can get the dollar amount they are looking for and the buyers suffers the consequences. It takes a lot of time searching on the ole interweb to keep up with what is out there for sale and find just what you want. Don't be fooled by a shiny paint job. Do your homework on what is underneath as well. I have noticed over the past year or so that the prices on pickups have really shifted into high gear and also the not so popular pickups are starting to appear more frequently such as Dodge, Studebaker, and Plymouth. Ford is still number one followed by Chevy. Good luck on the search.

I think that first one, black, with a flattie in NY would be the pick to look at. I don't understand how to get more into the ad and the one pic and description leave out a lot. At that price point would still have room to make your own improvements from maybe AC to better suspension/brakes, and/or maybe a later OHV SBF, or drive as is and enjoy it.
