Minor Changes
 

So last night I finally got rid of my old door mirrors (about time for a change since I couldn't see out of them and they were held together by tape rendering them nonadjustable) :-X04 The next thing that I would like to do, is buy some grille inserts from LMC or maybe JBG because mine are cracking, but I can't decide between the darkened ones or the original looking inserts. Anyone have any pictures?

Original looks better. The black ones make it look like you have a big hole in front.

Nice looking truck! Mine looks the same except it's 2WD and has no bumper guards. It even has your old (type 7) mirrors. You can get new mirror glass put in them. I wouldn't scrap them unless they're totally beat up.

The new mirrors look right at home, and look good on there. Did they completely cover the mount holes from the old mirrors?

Never was a big fan of the blacked out grilles on any dent, they made it look like a giant void in the front, just like Jklnhyd said. Stock looks good, and the rectangle tube horizontal aftermarkets aren't too bad if you want a "different" look - but that's the only 2 I ever really liked.

Get the stock ones, and if you want blackout, just use plastidip or something removable - or not.

Here's the thing about blacking out your grills: You need to do it the way Henry did it. Most enthusiasts simply paint the whole thing black, and it does kind of end up looking like the grills are missing.
Look at '76 -'77 Free Wheeling trucks and how their grills are blacked out, only the actual air intake part is black - the rectangular frame and its one vertical and two horizontal ribs.
The raised rib which surrounds the whole assembly, headlight hole and all, is still silver or argent or whatever.
A similar treatment might work on the '73-'75 grills.

I noticed the plates too, and where he lives now. Hopefully the Montana title is in his name, so he can smog it as federal. If he bought it as a California resident, he will need california smog stuff.

I may be wrong, but thats how I think it works. California wants people to buy california cars.

Yep this truck is from Montana. Bought it from my uncle after hearing he wanted to sell it, after the first time I saw it I knew I wasn't going to let it go to anyone else haha. In the process of installing smog parts, California definitely makes it difficult

I also agree with others that say to keep it stock, I think the "Black-out" looks good in some circumstances, but part of the character of these trucks is the front end!

Not to take this thread off track, but could you tell me what the attachments you have on your front bumper are referred to as? I was considering getting some for my 75 F100, but have no idea on how to search for it.

Last May 2016 I purchased my 77 F-150 out of Casper, Wyoming and had to go through a California Smog Referee in order to register it. Hope you have the same experience I encountered, meaning it wasn't too difficult. I had to change back to original configuration which involved getting an OEM thematic air cleaner and installing the OEM 2150 2 barrel carburetor. The PO installed an after market edelbrock intake manifold and at first, the referee wanted me to change it an OEM intake. After three weeks I reported back to the Smog referee indicating I was not having any luck locating an OEM intake manifold. I pointed out to the Smog referee on a printed out copy of the edelbrock intake specs that it was 50 State legal. The Smog referee conceded and insisted I install the OEM 2150 carburetor. I did and he passed me. I don't know with certainty, but I'm inclined to think that if an individual exhibits diligence complying, the referees exercise reasoning in the judgment.

Excellent observation. Certainly not true of all of them, because there still always seems to be some A-hole who isn't impressed by such efforts. But I guess the BS stops when the tailpipe-sniffin' hose drops...
