Door Hinge
Does anyone know why Ford used the Phillips head bolts on the hinges attached to the door post. They used hex head bolts on the door side but not against the post. There seems to be plenty of room for hex head bolts against the post side of the hinge. I am sure you know i will tear up the Phillips head ones getting them out after 50 yrs.

No idea, but lots of PB blaster and soak time. Use a very proper quality grade phillips head bit. Maybe a #3 bit will fit better than a #2.
Wet the bit end and put it in some fine sand or baking power to help get the bit to bite. You do not want to strip them and you really do not want to break them off. Maybe even have a set of vice grips on the head edge and the bit in to help break it lose. |
Been soaking them for a couple of weeks....only one came out.these little screws are not very big . It appears that replacement hinges and hardware come with hex head bolts. Not what Ford did. Maybe have to drill !??? Wrong time of year to not have doors in the morning though.

heat & impact works as well.
Sometimes I use an old school impact driver/hammer driven hand (non ele/pnuematic) tool. Unsuccessful? (broken off) No worries. A center punch, right size drill, pic to pull out remaining thread pieces in the OD of the 'hole', followed by chasing the threads w/ a right sized tap can perform a great result. Keep in touch, let us know if this is not what ur askin! |
Dead on as to what i want to do. Have not tried the heat yet. up for it this afternoon.

"...not tried the heat…"
No oxy/acet here @ home so I just use a lill handheld tank w/the cheepo tip (propane?) after a day or so of 'penetrating oil'. BTW: last X we spoke U sent some pic of the '68M…how's it doin these daze? |
Success !!!!! One door down.
Lots of Liquid Wrench--little heat from propane torch....big Phillips head driver on end of impact wrench....( saw this done. On Triton s. Plug removal on you tube..so what the heck huh) M715 is pretty well living at my son in laws. ...3/4 mile from here. So it is close by. |
second door need help?
AND
Behinf Door Number Two....? |
All done. Re drilled the old holes on the hinges out to 5/16 and put in hitch pins that size. Now have removable doors. Cost like 12$ for the hitch pins. There is plenty of room to use body bolts on door post and not have to deal with the flush mount Phillips head bolts.

removable door
same here. I have some pins w/the wire bail that snaps over to lock/unlock so they don't fall out.
have fun, B safe AND productive! |
