Has anyone swapped steering wheels?
I looked all over to see if anyone has done this or mentioned it.
On my 3 1/2 hour drive home my hands were cramping all up from holding onto the tiny diameter steering wheel. All of my other vehicles have thicker steering wheels and I haven't had a problem with my hands on them. I know I know old guy problems......haha Just looking to see if there is a common swap to a Ford steering wheel or any other ideas? Thanks! |
I was going to use the steering wheel from a 1987-1991 F150. Looks like it will fit
|
This steering wheel is a direct swap. It is found on more upscale models [XLT, Bronco, vans, etc.].

Steering wheel cover?....
|
I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for one of those wheels in the junk yards.
I don't thing a cover will add much to it. I'll have to measure mine and see what the diameter is because it feels like 1/2 the diameter of some of my other vehicles. |

Why change the steering wheel when you can install a cover on it? And, I'd be willing to bet that by installing a 1987 or later wheel, the Speed Control switch (if present) in the horn pad won't be compatible, plus there probably other parts that are different. |
Does your truck have cruise control? As stated, the switches may be different.
|
Yeah it has the cruise control buttons but i'll never use them. I'm not a big fan of cruise control because I get sleepy not controlling the throttle.
|
Did you change it and if so, what did you go with? I need to do this as well.

I actually just finished covering mine. I used a couple of cheap covers from Amazon, some thin flexible foam padding, and some medical tape. No joke. I've attached the end result.
The foam I used was the kind of stuff that gets packed in front of a LCD television or monitor when it ships. I just wrapped it around the old thin wheel, then wrapped the medical coban tightly around that to keep it in place. I wanted the two tone look with the tan wrap and black thread, so I purchased both a tan and black steering wheel cover from Amazon: I wrapped the black first without using the thread, wrapped coban around it again to keep it tight, then finally wrapped the tan around using the black thread. I think the result looks great and it's incredibly comfortable. You'd never know I used strange materials to make up the insides. Whole process took about two hours, so you need patience. I think it's worth it though. This is the second F-150 I've wrapped this way, though the other was a 2007 and didn't need the extra padding. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...98ce8b81f9.jpg |
That look nice too bad the center is not brown, to me the black does not do it for me LOL.
My truck had the wheel wrapped ........ with thin rope! I swapped out the whole column with my parts truck. http://cars.grantskingdom.com/var/re...220_131515.jpg Dave ---- |

Great job, that wrap looks solid! Do you have a link to the foam you used? I am thinking of a couple of different options after seeing this, thanks for sharing. When I did mine, I took the horn pad off and cut all the material immediately around where the pads mount to the wheel, other than the outer layer. That way it was thin enough around that area to reattach the horn pad and cover up the fact that I couldn't stitch around there. |
