E350 REAR END GOING MAYBE ???
 

I have a 2004 E350 box van. Past 2 years torque converter replaced. Then 6 months later transmission rebuilt .now there is a scrubbing sound first thought brakes then maybe wheel bearing ..slowing down can really hear the scrubbing. Going down highway the sound I'm beginning to think may be the scrubbing just a faster speed. Any ideas at all ??

Start with the simplest issues and work your way to the more complicated/expensive.

1. Make sure the parking brake is completely released.

2. Make sure the tires aren't rubbing on anything.

3. Make sure nothing got between the brakes and the wheels or calipers and rotors.

4. Check the brakes for any issues. I'm pretty sure a 2004 should be disc brakes. If it is make sure to check both the main brakes and the parking brake.

5. Check U-joints and replace if bad.

6. Check and replace the axle bearings and seals if they are bad. This is even more important if you have a semi-floater rear diff. The semi floaters( at least the older ones ) used the axle shaft for the inner bearing race. That means the longer you drive with a bad bearing. The more damage you do to the axle shaft itself.

7. If everything else checks out then you may have to tear into the guts of the differential ( gears and bearings ). :( Or swap out the entire rear diff.

Is it a constant noise as you're going down the road? Does it vary with speed? Does it change when you do something like hit the accelerator or brake pedal? What about cornering?
