i think the general consensus around here is a flowmaster cat-back system. on my personal vehicle (97 taurus) i just took off my muffler completely, but left on the resonator. i like the sound - hearty, but not too loud.

People have reported a bit more zip and even better gas mileage with a better exhaust system. Flowmaster & Gibson are the choice of many 3.0L Ranger owners.

I think the preference around here is the 40 Series...if you go to the Flowmaster Homepage they have a bunch of them listed.

www.flowmastermufflers.com (you might have to copy and paste the address)

I'm not sure which one fits the Ranger 3.0L setup, or if you might need a muffler shop to help you fit one on there. Maybe someone around here who has done it will help out.

I'm very happy with a Gibson SS cat back on my 1999 3.0L..

rholcomb 09-25-2003 09:05 AM

What measurable results do you have that make you happy with the Gibson SS? Better sound, power, fuel mileage- all of'em?

Bob Ayers 09-25-2003 09:26 AM

The Gibson has a very mellow tone, that isn't obnoxious. The only
thing I can judge the power improvement on (nothing seat of the
pants), is it used to shift out of OD with the cruise set between
70-75MPH while going up some of the inclines going north on I81
through Va. . After installing the Gibson, it is able to maintain that
speed in OD. The highway average MPG went from 22 to 24. This
is with a 2WD 3.0L FFV Ranger....

Welcome to FTE, and I hope this answers your questions!!!!

Thank-you. Yes it does indeed, and in the right direction. I have a '99 Ranger and drive round trip 60+ miles to work. I feel good to get near 22mpg with mostly highway driving. I need to retain this vehicle since living in the country requires items to be hauled in from time to time. Otherwise content with my Ranger except for fuel mileage. Anything to increase mpg is worth serious consideration.
