The 6.2 Experience...
Ford has done a nice job with this engine. Very good power and excellent lower-end torque. I like it for a long time, durable and reliable engine. The E85 capability could mean fuel savings as well. This engine and transmission duo seem to be the best currently available and capable for many years ahead.
What have been your thoughts, expectations and reality in your experience with this engine? |

I also like the 6.2, especially with the 2017's improved torque specs. Our truck's first major road trip and towing application is coming up.
E85 fuel contains less specific energy than typical E10 fuel, so MPG and tank range take a hit. Few local stations in our area carry E85, and their prices are not significantly better than for E10. Our grocery store sells discounted gas cards, so I pay less per gallon for E10 fuel over a broader range of station brands and locations. Here's a link to the 6.2 engine forum. Enjoy! Jim / crewzer |
E85 is quite a bit cheaper here, but I found the milage dip to make it a wash at best. On that note I drive and tow my boat a bunch in the hills. Flat Landers may not take as bad of a hit.

Pure ethanol, as present in either E10 or E85, has just over 65% of the energy content by volume of pure gasoline. Mileage will fall using E85 compared to E10; It's physics. E85 can be used, but it isn't the "What a genius I am, I'm getting the same mileage as the rest of you schmucks while filling my tank at $1.89 a gallon" miracle that's 'discovered' on this forum from time to time.

This is my first Ford, first SD, and first time driving the 6.2L. So far my experience is nothing short of good. My research has stated its reliable and strong. I have no doubt it will last for years and be trouble free. Transmission is as smooth as can be. :)

I did not really need a SD truck but I was looking at F150s and just happened to stumble on the fact that a F250 Lariat, optioned as I wanted, was almost identical in cost to similarly equipped F150 Lariat trucks I had been shopping.....which made it a no-brainer when you figure it as $/pound.....:-X04
So far, I have no issues with the 6.2...moves the truck down the road perfectly fine.......:-X22 |

Not to knock anyone's choice, but the 6.2 SD vs ecoboost F150 choice isn't without tradeoffs. The F150 has exactly the same cab, rides better, much much better gas mileage... The SD surely has more capability as far as hauling and towing. There's a place for each.

I've been more than happy with the 6.2. I went from towing my 30' TT with a short wheel base Yukon to the 6.2 SD. There is plenty of power and my mileage hardly suffers when towing. Having never owned/maintained a diesel, it just made sense to go with the gas engine that is more than capable of what I ask of it.

I have a 2016 F150 King Ranch. Loaded. I LOVE the EcoBoost. I'm amazed at the guts it has, and jet like acceleration in Sport Mode. I've driven diesels for just shy of forever, and know turbo lag well. This EcoBoost has none, and there are very few cars on the road that'll give me a good run. It's the sports car I never had, or wanted. That all with the Max Tow and 19.3 MPG average to date over 35,000 miles.
These make me VERY hesitant to go to the 6.2L gasser just because of loss of performance, economy, and fun-to-drive feelings. The diesel at least provides some of that, but after 150k miles, I'm thinking ONLY the 6.2L will have the empty repair bill folder. Ugh! Decisions, decisions. |
