Buying a 1990 Ford Bronco

I'm looking to possibly buy a 1990 Bronco with relatively low miles (125k). The body seems to be in good shape with little rust shown. It has the 351 with an E4OD trans. What are some known issues that I should look at before buying? I've heard the first years of this trans could be an issue. Thanks in advance! :oval

the Trans should be the main concern. you can anticpate $2500-$3000 for a replacemnt. I would have a shop give it a once over. if you are this serious about the bronco it would be worth the $$/hour shop time.

That verifies my main concern. I'd love to find a manual but everything I find seems to be an auto or a manual in poor shape.

At the very least get a good look and sniff of the transmission fluid while it's running. If it's brown or burnt, then I'd walk away. Also if you suspect anything shady, be wary of fluid that's brand new as it's easy to get a transmission to stop slipping for a few hundred miles with nothing more than a fluid change. If you can get it to a shop to get it inspected (which is a VERY GOOD idea) make sure they drop the transmission pan and see what kind of surprises are hiding in it.

If it's been well maintained there is no reason to shy away from it though.

Thanks! That's some good tips.

Looks like I won't be buying that Bronco after all. The transmission needs to be rebuilt. I'll have to patiently wait for another or wait till this one is fixed.

If you like the truck, offer them $3K less and have the tranny rebuilt.
