2001 F350 growls? At startup

I notice that while I'm cycling the glow plugs prior to starter engagement there's a (growl?) At about the same time the light goes out.

Colorado350 10-05-2017 09:37 PM

A couple questions:
Regarding the light are you referring to the WTS light or a GPR light?
Do you have a GPR or GPCM?
Is it every time you cycle the GPR?

Take a piece of hose and use it to listen for the "growl" , put 1 end up to your ear and the other to the GPR etc. Sound likes to travel this helps you isolate the noise.

Jchet729 10-05-2017 09:47 PM

Yes the wts light in the dash. Not sure yet if it's a relay or module.
Only had this truck a few months so far. Getting ready to mobilize to Texas this winter and pulling my 35' travel trailer. Moved up from a standard cab 12v dodge, needed the CC this rig offered.
Usually I'm in the 73-79 dentside forum

Rikster-7700 10-05-2017 09:52 PM

Is it a growl or a vibration? Do you have a 4×4? I am wondering if it's your vacuum pump you're hearing?

Jchet729 10-05-2017 10:27 PM

4a-4? I'll have to look into that. I've been on the road all week. I'll take a pic when I get home and maybe you guys can help educate me to working on diesel. I wouldn't say it starts hard but it sure doesn't pop like my 12v did
Found a reference to injectors making me think the p.o. fibbed to me about replacing them... quote
(This sounds a lot like tired injectors. There have been several trucks in the last several years that wouldn't start unless they were plugged in even in mild to warm weather. 280k is a lot of miles on stock injectors. Some go farther but many die sooner.)
except I don't have to plug it in and it doesn't smoke much

HD Rider 10-05-2017 10:53 PM

I'm guessing you are hearing the vacuum pump located on the passenger side front fender well.
Open the hood, stand on that side and listen while someone else turns the key on. It's normal to hear it after the truck has been sitting a while.

Walleye Hunter 10-06-2017 06:25 AM

I don't know what the thing is that he (we) is (are) hearing but both of my trucks do it too. My '01 parts truck is louder and I never noticed that my DD does it until I heard it on the other truck. At key on it seems to come from down around the oil cooler area on both trucks. If need be I could probably get an audio off of the plow truck. I noticed that it also does it when I hook up me Forescan. It's a short, eeeee 1 second grrrr.

Mark, probably the vacuum pump. My 97 didn't have the electric so when I first got the E99 it was somewhat concerning. I don't hear it on every startup, only if rig has been sitting for a few days. Electric Vacuum pumps are quite noisy (they vibrate like hell) when they first start pulling a vacuum but quiet down quickly. Just bad mounting brackets can cause the sound to be misleading to where the noise is actually coming from.

I don't think it's the vacuum pump, I know what and where that is and this sound comes from the driver's side of the engine bay. I'll get a recording of it.

Have a helper jump in and key on and get to the noise. Aside from the very good input above, your quite likely hearing your frame rail pump that sits on the frame below your left knee. If it's loose, she'll rattle. If your planning on taking the trip you spoke of, and you have no idea if it's ever been replaced, buy one and the quick fuel line disconnect tool and carry with.

Nope, not that either, that one runs for about 20 seconds and sounds different. This thing sort of sounds like a short cow 'moo'.

MoBill122 10-06-2017 06:31 PM

My 01 GROANS like an old man saying... You want me to go again ? OMG..... ;)

z31freakify 10-06-2017 07:29 PM

I know what hes talking about about every ford we have on the fleet 99-04 gas or diesel both do this demon growl I can pin point to the passenger side but can never find the culprit, might be something in the HVAC system?

DieselDenny 10-07-2017 08:54 AM

Could it be the blend door repositioning. That would go slow.

Try to put the heater controls in the off position and see if it still moos.

:')

UcaN 10-07-2017 10:01 AM

Sure it's not the fuel bowl after the fuel pump shuts off...??

Mine does a growl kinda noise when the fuel pump shuts off......and it comes from the fuel bowl area. Usually you don't hear it because most of us let the glow plugs run for a while then get the engine running, but if you cycle the key long enough for the fuel pump to shut off you will hear that noise.

Walleye Hunter 10-07-2017 10:17 AM

It could be the blend door or the fuel bowl. The part that gets me is how it also does it when I have me Forescan hooked up. I'm not sure if it's when I do a 'clear' or 'connect'. I'll check it out.

brandonrr 10-08-2017 09:35 PM

I think the OP is talking about the brief PAAH sound around the same time the wait to start light goes out. My first 7.3 did it, as did many of the ones i test drove before buying my current 7.3. I too, would like to know what makes that sound. My current 7.3, a late 99 doesn't make that sound. No running issues, except for a soft code for the EBPV and no EBPV action on cols start. I can't imagine the EBPV makes that sound though.

Jchet729 10-10-2017 04:20 PM

Now that the blend door has been mentioned, I'll have to try the heater controls in different positions. I guess I could describe it as maybe not a growl but just a low pitched "rrrr"...
I need more home time to tinker with this thing. Maybe I'll start a fix this n fix that thread so I can get input as I have time to do stuff.

Jchet729 10-10-2017 04:24 PM

Because I know from the '73-'79 forum that we all like pics.. here's what I have on my new phone https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...c0aff9c4b7.jpg

That's the special edition "Gi Joe Crawl Mode" :-missingt

Jchet729 10-11-2017 11:08 AM

LoL, no worries. They're on the ground now... that's hopefully not a permanent paint job on the wheels either. Clear was so beat up I couldn't stand it.
the tires are ironman, allcountry? They're like an all terrain mud or something
245/70 or 75 I forgot to look this morning but whatever it said was stock on the door sill.
planning on putting same tires on rear.

It's just we all always like to know about new tires and how they wear. Been running Michelin on mine because nothing else seems to last. They look aggressive and wondered how they sound going down the road? That was funny, just not to the point. God bless :-drink

Can't say I've noticedthat I can even hear them over the 7.3. Friend of mine i bought them from says hes sold a bunch of them & they seem to be wearing really good. I was thinking of putting Hankook dynapro atm on but he wanted me to look at these.

Ironman tires were bought by Hercules been doing some research on them. I was looking at these Ironman A/P they look a lot like the Michelin. I'd be interested in hearing how you like the Ironman tires and how they wear.

@ $127.oo each not a bad price if they last. Aren't Michelin R rated? These are Q, what is the difference?

Looks like about 6 mph...

Bonanza35 10-12-2017 04:01 PM

Nice, I've looked for that in the past. So I hope these tires last! Just bought two new ones for up front,or I'd give them a chance.

Update.
So I've got about 500 or so miles on the new steers. I've been running around with the front windows down and the radio off (as long as it's nice out). Maybe it's just me, but I'm gonna say I front think these tire are noisy at all. Maybe once I get the rears mounted I'll hear more but so far I can barely hear any new tire whine.

oops. Sorry. They don't seem to be noisy

Better late than never...right? Here's a non video of the sound my trucks make at key on.

And here is where they seem to emanate from. This apparatus sits in front of the driver's side tire on the back side of the grill below the battery. It has what looks like brake lines passing through it.

Nice to know where it is, never seen that before. Worked on my truck many times in that area.
