Stuck in the middle with you...
No Stealer's Wheel here, but I do have some pretty rusted / seized front cab mount bolts on a 1978 F250. I'm trying to take the front clip off and these jokers don't want to budge. I've tried:
a few applications of PB Blaster over a few hours a torch to the bolt head a torch to the nuts I've managed to get one of them free enough that the bolt and nut spin in place together, but I can't get the bolt head secured enough to spin the nut with a breaker bar. Any advice??? |

There a real pita even if the bolts had come out the two shoulders running thru bushing sticks even worse , Only advice is to torch bolt head off but the two shoulders of hardware will not separate if frozen and nut is made on to lower shoulder an washer as all in one piece , top piece slides into lower with upper washer made on all in one piece, as you see one in picture I was lucky bolts came out of mine but I had to cut split in top washer hardware to remove rubber bushing and that let me get cutting wheel under to cut top washer off of upper shoulder hardware as you can see in the picture but I had the cab off to do the job , after that the lower piece fell out , I heated with a torch to cherry red to separate the two shoulder pieces with BFH and plan to weld upper hardware washer back to shoulder to reuse an install new bushings
If you could get a socket to hold on the bolt and using a 3/4 drive pneumatic impact gun and a wrench locked on bottom is how my bolts came out and was lucky they didn't break . Also on frame the opening was rusted out an had to weld in replacement pieces to reform the mounting area . |
Thanks! These cab mounts are on the front - by the radiator - and I'm assuming that just torching the crap out of those bolts will not harm the radiator, headlights or anything else at the front.
I'm tempted to just get the sawzall and buy the hardware. Not sure how much time these things are really worth. |
Yea the front ones under radiator can be removed any way you want , the radiator support mounts are almost always are frozen, had to cut those off completely but saved the shoulders to make new ones,,I would pull the radiator off just to cut them out , those aren't cab mounts just radiator support mounts .I ran a 79 for years without them and never had an issue,

When you can easily get to the bottom of the mounts, and also get the bolts out, you can drill up through the center until you get to the mating point. Once you cut through that part you can often just pull things apart easily. Or in a pinch, stick an old bolt or drift/punch/thingy in there and whack it with a hammer again. This time it should pop right out.
What you need to do is break that bond between the two halves. If you drill just slightly larger than the bore, it's easier but might no let go right away. If you can really dig things out with a slightly larger bit, you can sometimes pull things apart by hand. The trouble with this method of course, is the ones that are not easily accessible from directly underneath with a decent sized drill motor. I think the ones you're talking about are accessible this way, but it's been awhile (a LONG while!) since I messed with mine. Good luck. They're quite the pain even when they cooperate. Much more so when they want to be! Paul |
What about one of those tools which cuts through the sides of the nut?
|
I couldn't get the bolts out on either side of the radiator support, so I just cut the darn things off. After seeing the bolt that came out, I'm not surprised! I haven't looked at the cab bolts just yet, but I don't have high hopes. :D
These are the passenger and driver sides of the frame near the radiator. Gonna have to use a washer of some kind to repair the driver side? https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...42bc21c9f4.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...10cb021158.jpg |

What type is that mg? The "nut splitter" things where a wedge cracks the nuts? Can't work in this case.

Does anyone know which sleeves I need to order off of broncograveyard.com to replace the ones I'm cutting out?
They have three different units listed: 1973-1979 Ford Bronco and F Series Truck Body Mount Sleeve, Large Lower-Broncograveyard.com 1973-1979 Ford Bronco and F Series Truck Body Mount Sleeve, Smaller Dia. Lower Position #2-Broncograveyard.com 1973-1979 Ford Bronco and F Series Truck Body Mount Sleeve, Lower Core Support-Broncograveyard.com |
I use a sazall on all these old body mounts. Then you cut the bolt and the sleeve at once. Sometimes it really bends the heck out of the blades though, and vibrates the hell out of your hands going through the rubber
|
Does anyone have a diagram of what the body mount positions are numbered? From core support on back. I'm assuming core support is #1, front of cab is #2, rear of cab is #3 and so on?

I agree with your idea of the front is #1 (or position #1) and so on.
