How to replace a stock '53 f100 gas tank ?
 

I have done all that I can to ensure that my fuel line between the gas tank and they fuel pump is tight. Yet, I am still getting a stream of bubbles into the fuel pump and the float bowl goes dry. The problem is particularly bad when I am trying to get up hill. I have decided that the feed tube in the gas tank must be corroded. I've got a new tank coming some time next week. I went under the truck to see just what would be involved in the install of this new tank. It doesn't look good. The only way that I can see to get the old tank out and the new tank in is to remove the metal arms that the tank sits on (also the running boards). But, the heavy metal bracket that holds the pivot for the brake and clutch are in the way of easy access to some of the arm bolts. And, since the bolts for these arms have not been turned since they were installed 64 years ago, I expect them to be a bit tough getting out. Does any one have any tips on the removal and replacement of stock gas tanks for 53-55 F100s? Can I just remove one of the brackets (the rearmost) and sort of slide the tank out?

I just installed a stock tank in my 55. This truck was bought as a basket case and the tank was out of it. The running board was already off. I couldn't slide it up in place without removing the frame brackets. It was easy for me to remove both brackets because I don't have the master cylinder or clutch linkage. You may be able to get it out after removing just the rear bracket. I would try it.

Greg is correct. Drain Tank. Loosen the band clamps that hold tank to the running board supports. remove the filler neck. remove only the rear running board bracket. Slide tank rearward and down.

I had the luxury of having my cab off, so I can't say from experience. But, the manual says to just remove the rear bracket. Of course the manual makes it sound so simple. Add 64 years of rust and it gets more challenging.

Also forgot to mention, disconnect hard fuel line at top of tank through the cab access hole and wires to sender.
