Ignition module question
 

My original 211,000 mile ignition module melted all its epoxy out on to the inner fender, still works, but I want to replace it. What is a good replacement? Mine is D8VE 12A199 A2B with a blue plastic plug on it. I don't want to buy junk. Thanks for the help in advance Ford gurus

Another junkyard blue-grommet module, or at least a Motorcraft unit would be the way to go from what I hear.
They do sometimes melt their guts out, and I don't know if we've ever discovered the exact reason. Obviously yours was one of the good ones to go that long!

By the way, can you see the wire colors still? If so, do only a couple of the wires have stripes? Or do they all have the color-coordinated striping to match the chassis side of the harness.

The larger 4-wire plug doesn't have matching wire colors.

I am running a Motocraft replacement from Rock Auto. Supposed to be the best available. My original, which looks a bit like yours, still works and is behind the seat "just in case".

Agree on running a Motorcraft ICM....with the blue grommet. Also recommend putting a few washers...or a spacer...between it and the fenderwell. Heat is the main cause of those bad boys goin' south. A bit of space between it and the fenderwell will allow some air circulation behind it and stop/slow down the caramelization of the ICM's innards.

Why not just fill it in with silicone?

ND says....Ignition modules, 74 (black grommet) and 75 (green grommet) are year specific and will not interchange. 76 to 79 (blue grommet) are interchangeable.
Ignition modules: 1974 is 1974 ONLY / 1975 is 1975 ONLY.
Blue module introduced in 1976 was used well into the 1990's.
D4AZ-12A199-C 1974 only
DuraSpark ignition modules identified by a colored plastic insert located above where the wires feed out.
2 others: One has a red plastic insert, the other has a yellow or brown plastic insert.
Red module is D7AZ-12A199-A used in some CA vehicles ONLY.
D9AZ-12A199-C (replaced D8AZ-12A199-A). One of these modules is yellow , one is brown .. Since the part number was replaced, I cannot recall which module was which color.
These modules were used in 1978/79 302 & 351M/W vehicles sold in high altitudes only. 351W: Passenger Cars & Econolines only.

Bottom line go with Motorcraft blue grommet, X2 on the washers for spacing. Silicone might work? But I think the stuff that melts is a sign of internal heat.

Another vote for nothing but Motorcraft. The McParts store stuff is only for until you can get a gennie Motorcraft unit on there, and then kept as a spare.

Keep that spare in a plastic bag if it still has any of the stuff that melts in it. Or make sure to store it melty side up.

I have one that ALL the stuff melted out and I can see the board, it looks fine and no sign of shorting out. But none the less it all melted out.

I just popped the hood this morning for a quick pre trip inspection (truck usually only gets driven once a week), and I seen the epoxy goop rolling down the inner fender. Nothing looks burnt, so who knows? We did hit 112 degrees a week ago?? Maybe the sun laser beamed it. I looked on Rock auto, they have the Motorcraft one, I'll probably buy it.

I went and looked at a 1977 Diplomat (dodge chassis) class A rv with a friend a couple years ago, and the current owner was selling cheap....the rv was is beautiful condition. During my inspection, I found this mysterious hard shiny material bleeding down on top of the transmission bell housing? It was from the Dodge ignition module. The previous owner had issues with the engine just dying randomly, and he couldn't figure out why, so he put it up for sale. When I showed the previous owner what I found...he just had a ***** grin on his face, and said "how did you find that?" I just told him that I'm good...lol. My friend drove the rv for a couple years, and it never skipped a beat.
