Code Diagnosis
Background information:
2000 F250 SD with re-manufactured motor installed about 100k ago. California Emissions truck. I was told the truck needed a new Glow Plug Control Module when I bought it and that was why the SES light was on. The truck started and ran good without any signs of overheating, etc. I have now replaced and preformed the following: Glow Plug Control Module (twice) Glow Plugs (checked harness continuity during install) Wastegate Solenoid Wastegate tubing set Checked preset and function of Wastegate Valve Traced Ground wire on Waste gate solenoid through 42 pin connector and as far as main harness that lead to PCM Hutch Mod Fuel Filter (Seafoam hot soak) Alternator Cleaned Exhaust Backpressure Sensor and line Recharged the batteries Detected a Parasitic Battery Drain in the #15 circuit for GEM, PCM, etc. Here is the list of codes that I am still getting after all of the above. I hate to just randomly replace components so I am hoping one of you more experienced technicians can maybe see a common denominator in these codes that will point me to the problem. Using FORScan for windows: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...r-windows.html Ran the codes again today using the FORScan: ===OBDII DTC P0670-C=== Code: P0670 - Glow Plug Module Control Circuit Status: - Confirmed - malfunction is confirmed Module: On Board Diagnostic II Diagnostic Trouble Code details Glow Plug Module Control Circuit This DTC may be caused by : Open circuit. Short circuit Possible causes are: Harness wiring GPCM PCM ===END OBDII DTC P0670-C=== ===OBDII DTC P1690-P=== Code: P1690 - Wastegate Solenoid Circuit Status: - Pending - malfunction is expected to be confirmed Module: On Board Diagnostic II Diagnostic Trouble Code details Wastegate Solenoid Circuit Follow the routines in the service manual to resolve the DTC listed. ===END OBDII DTC P1690-P=== ===PCM DTC P1690=== Code: P1690 - Wastegate Solenoid Circuit Module: Powertrain Control Module Diagnostic Trouble Code details Wastegate Solenoid Circuit Follow the routines in the service manual to resolve the DTC listed. ===END PCM DTC P1690=== ===PCM DTC P1000=== Code: P1000 - On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Systems Readiness Test Not Complete Module: Powertrain Control Module Diagnostic Trouble Code details Check of all systems is not complete since last memory clear. --Possible Causes-- - The vehicle is new from the factory and has not yet been through a complete OBD Drive Cycle. - The battery or PCM has been disconnected. - An OBD monitor failure had occurred prior to completion of an OBD Drive Cycle. - The PCM DTCs have been cleared as part of a service process. Note: The only way P1000 can be cleared (removed) from memory is when all of the OBD monitors have been successfully completed during normal vehicle operation. P1000 cannot be cleared from the PCM when: 1. The thermostat is stuck open and a DTC is not generated. 2. There is an open VSS circuit and a DTC is not generated. 3. If the vehicle has a Power Take Off (PTO), the circuit is shorted to VPWR or B+, or the PTO is ON during Self-test. The purpose of the Diagnostic Trouble Code DTC P1000 is to indicate that not all of the On Board Diagnostics OBD monitors have yet been successfully completed. You may also refer to the OBD Drive Cycle defined under the Powertrain Control/Emission Diagnosis Manual-Diagnostic Methods or the Owner's Manual. Remember: It is not necessary to remove P1000 from the Powertrain Control Module PCM by driving the vehicle. ===END PCM DTC P1000=== ===PCM DTC P0230=== Code: P0230 - Fuel pump primary circuit malfunction Module: Powertrain Control Module Diagnostic Trouble Code details Fuel pump primary circuit malfunction. This DTC may be caused by : Open or grounded fuel pump primary circuit. The Wastegate Circuit problem is leading me to the PCM since I have traced the wiring all the way to the main harness before the plug. |
Has it always been a CA emissions truck, or just since the rebuild? Have you pulled the PCM to check the code on it, or do you know if the PCM is original to the truck? Any idea what year block was used for the replacement? Short block or long block? Trying to figure out which parts might have been left and which were replaced with the swap.

The VIN decode states it was a California Emissions Vehicle:
Build Date 26.05.2000 Vehicle Line: F250/350/450/550 Super Duty Body Style: Super Single Cab Version: 250 Series Engine: 7.3L Diesel V8 Turbo Transmission: 4 Spd Auto Trans EAO A4LE Drive: LHD 4WD (PTD) Axle Ratio: 3.73 Emission: California Emission Requirements Air Conditioning: Manual Air Conditioning Paint: Harvest Gold W/B I went through the receipts and found that in 2014 all of the following were done to the truck. Most by a Ford Dealer. I pulled the PCM and the only numbers on it were scratched into the plastic 78-8677. No labels, stickers, bar codes were found on it. Looked as though it had been spray painted black at some point. The guy I bought it from said the replacement motor was a 2002 Re-manufactured crate motor but that was all he knew. I couldn't find any receipts or records for the replacement motor, only a label on the passenger valve cover that says Re-manufactured. Here's a picture of the engine serial number if that helps. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...a083599014.jpg |
Bump to keep on front page!

Where did you look up the VIN data?

Spray painted black means it's not original, and may or may not be the source of your problem. The PCM itself should be a black plastic with a removable tab on the end that has the PCM code on it. The housing should be silver. Since it sounds like it may have been replaced, is the little ground clip in place?
Here's some removal instructions that has pictures of what the end tab with code is supposed to look like. (bottom of page 2) https://www.totaldieselperformance.c...pinstall99.pdf |
I don't remember any grounding clip. Do you have a picture of it?
Here's the pictures I took when I removed the PCM to try and find out what number/kind it was. The numbers scratched in the plastic matched the ones on the receipt from Ford Dealer: https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...bef0ce7b70.jpghttps://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...26e5591b3a.jpghttps://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...b7fd462ba9.jpghttps://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...a2470813d3.jpghttps://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...63ce3eba26.jpghttps://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...cbe5f3cf6c.jpg |

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...b7fd462ba9.jpg Next, have you considered a chip / tuner? One of the tuning guys might be able to offer some programming that could compensate for any incorrect PCM code. |
Do you have Forescan by any chance? Forescan will read your PCM information and tell you what it is.

It is interesting that the copyright date is 2010 and my truck was built in 2000.

I saw that too, you did say that it had been replaced/rebuilt so that explains it.

Pulled the interior fuse box and GEM today. Very dirty but no signs of burned contacts.
Cleaned everything up and reinstalled. Removed front left wheel and fender liner, pulled all the plugs and cleaned every connection and reassembled. Someone had been in there before as I found a splice (still good) and some bare spots on wires. Red with Green stripe being chased by the look of it. Went for a drive and SES stayed off until my next key cycle. Same codes I have been fighting since the beginning. ===OBDII DTC P0670-C=== Code: P0670 - Glow Plug Module Control Circuit Status: - Confirmed - malfunction is confirmed Module: On Board Diagnostic II Diagnostic Trouble Code details Glow Plug Module Control Circuit This DTC may be caused by : Open circuit.
