Automatic Regeneration Control
1 Attachment(s)
Have searched the forum but by my reading I have not found any conclusive description as to what this function does. In ForScan - this this parameter is under the IPC and I believe by default is disabled.
What does this allow when enabled vs. disabled? |
No one or is this a dumb question. This is the screen from ForScan...

On standard trucks, auto regeneration of the DOF is active and always working in the background to regent at >95% Soot. There are threads that you can order XL trucks or cab chassis with manual regen. You can also try and convince the dealer to do a change in the IDS system (not available in Forscan) to "deselect" auto regen. This allows you to manually engage a stationary regen or turn in auto again when more convenient.
but, here is the caveat. If it is not auto generating, you must do a stationary regen or stop, turn back to auto and drive. You don't want to plus the DOF and end up needing a manual clean off the truck. You don't want someone driving your truck not paying attention. Advice would be have a DashBoss or others gauges to monitor DOF%Soot. i plan to have this done next oil change and I saved the link to the IDS pages/screens for my diesel tech to try. typing in a phone so I will leave it at that but if you have questions I will do my best to answer if I can. |
The XLTs can be had with manual regen too. If I went diesel, I would definitely select this option as I own a small ranch and the last thing I would need is my truck going into regen when I'm out in the pasture. Could end up burning down the whole county.
You're just have to be a little more mindful to properly maintain the emissions on a manual regen equipped truck. |
So if you have the manual regeneration option, you can turn the auto regen on and off? I thought it automatically did the auto regen but gave you the option to do it manually if the percentage was high enough.
|
Auto regen does regen automatically under the correct circumstances, sustained speed over 50 mph, and must continue to drive in order to complete. Once stopped, it will finish, at a later time. Manual regen allows you do a stationary regen and it cannot be interrupted.
Auto won't burn a field down, unless your driving 50 mph..... |
The question I have is this. On the trucks with the manual regen option, is there a setting on the truck that you have to set to "ON" to make sure the auto regen will still do its thing like it normally would?

Good to know, thanks. |
There is no 50 MPH threshold for auto regen. Regen runs at any speed over 8 or 10 mph. Can't remember which. I've had plenty of regens just running around town at 15-35 MPH.

Better to know, thanks. :-X10

No, auto regeneration is the default when you have the "operator commanded regeneration" feature. This was a concern for me with my first regeneration, as I was driving all highway and the filter status kept incrementing. Then I did my first OCR, and after that the auto regeneration took place the next time the filter status got high enough. It seemed to me the DPF needed a burn in before the auto regen started working. I've only had these two regens so I am answering you from very limited experience.

Thanks, that answers my question. I assumed it would be set to automatically do the regens like it normally would and that you just had the option to do it manually if needed. Thanks again!
I think I would have preferred a prompt like 'Hey, DPF is 100%, drive around or plan to park, which do you prefer this time?' |

Just to clarify, and not that you are confused by this, but using the OCR is not so much of an option. As it comes from the factory on the 2017 the diesel particulate filter status has to first reach 100% AND you put the vehicle in park, before it prompts you to start an OCR, and any other time it is not something you can initiate without the plug-in and software. I suspect that means the normal "active" regeneration that it would otherwise prompt to drive around for when the DPF gets full is probably disabled.

Sorry, I think you misunderstood, I meant 50 KmH, I think as long as your speed isn't sustained over the threshold, it will not start an active regen as every time you slow below the threshold, it will stop active regen. Eventually, it will require you to do a stationary regen to protect the DPF. It will prompt you to drive or park at this point. The problem as I see it for manual regen trucksoften fleet vehicles, is the user may not heed the warnings. Same if you happen to loan your truck to someone who doesn't understand why it needs to regen. I would prefer it automatically does all this, but that I do have the ability to deselect auto and monitor myself. I will see if I am successful at the dealer in doing so in the IDS. Then I can experiment. I would much prefer the extra fuel burning is done on the move, than stationary.
