2018 Ford F-150 and Expedition getting powertrain upgrades

Changes for the 2018 F-150 are as follows:

All engines get standard stop/start technology.


The 5.0 numbers are a bit underwhelming IMO, but it will be interesting to see the fuel economy.

Also look for yet another powerful new option… with a new 3.0L Power Stroke® Diesel engine. Coming in Spring 2018.

The Super Duty Trucks use a different method for determining HP and Torque than the F150. If the 5.0 was in the Super Duty the numbers would be lower as well. It's kind of an industry standard to rate consumer trucks & commercial trucks differently.

I feel like 400 ft-lbs would be enough for pulling my trailer around, so it seems like I have lots of options! That's great, now I just need the money to buy one.

They suppress the 5.0, it could easily exceed 400hp... the ecoboost is their thing now.

I agree, Ford is sandbagging the 5.0, not only in HP/TQ but also MPG

Everybody always wants more, but 395 HP /400 ft.lb. is pretty impressive for a small displacement V8. The Chevy 5.3 only makes 355 HP / 383 ft.lb..

The 5.0L is the powerhouse fleet engine (vs the V6 which is used by fleets that need a truck bed, but not much power capacity). It's designed to be rugged, run hard, put away wet, and still make good power. You can't make a rugged engine if you're wringing every last ounce of power out. The F-250 6.2L is a great example of this. The fact that they have added direct injection and done upgrades shows they are committed to the platform, they are just not committing in the direction you want them to.

A few tweaks from factory and the 5.0 would obliterate the ecoboost engines ( let alone GM's offerings ), the ecoboost is/was supposed to be the future of powerful fuel efficient engines. Slight problem the 5.0 is as efficient if not more efficient.They don't want the 5.0 as the brands marquee engine.

What tweaks would make it as powerful as the ecoboost while running 87 octane and standing to miss a few oil changes, and be driven hard with a trailer on the back all day? Of course said engine would still need to be as fuel efficient as the eco as well, so you've got to factor that in too. Because that's what the 5.0's duty is.

And they could put the slightly modified raptor EB in the regular f150 but it won't happen. Your not going to get the low end torque out of the 5.0 with out forced induction, that is where the EB shines. Both are great engines and both have a different target audience.

In stock form there isn't a huge difference in power between the two. Aside from the Ecoboost makes more power on the low end and the 5.0 makes more on the top end. For equal $$....add an aftermarket tune to each and the Ecoboost will have a substantial advantage. If you have deep enough pockets to add forced induction to the 5.0 ($6k-$7k) than the 5.0 will be in a league of it's own.

Where do you get that from? Curious to know your source for so clairvoyantly determining their intentions. Why would they have anything against the engine that they designed and built? If they did...why in the heck would they even go through the hassle of designing and building it?

Why would they go through the hassle with redesigning the heads for direct injection? :-hair

So you don't think ALL their advertising is geared towards the Ecoboost platform. Clearly Ford is pushing the Ecoboost. I have no direct line to FOMOCO but it's obvious they want the Ecoboost engines to outshine anything else they offer.
