Keys and remotes

I have recently purchased a 2000 F-150 XLT. Unfortunately the truck only came with one key and no key FOBS. The truck does have power windows and locks. I have also seen a “theft” light flash on the dash. With all of this I assume that the truck is capable of receiving inputs from a key FOB.

Is there an easy way for me to tell if the truck is capable of receiving inputs from a key FOB and which Key FOB will work with the truck? Are there markings on the truck? Is it listed somewhere in the owners manual?

As far as getting spare keys made, is there any special about the keys? Do they have a chip in them? Will any blank key work?

The keys must be made by a Ford dealer and programmed for your truck. Look to spend about $80 for a key. Look in the manual about teaching the FOB. It has something to do with turning the key on and off like 8 times and the locks will lock or unlock. ou can get the FOB's on E-Bay pretty cheap.

Keys and remotes

Cycle the power locks 8 times (lock/unlock) and if the horn honks it should have the remote keyless. This is the programming mode for the remotes. If you had a remote you would press a key and it would learn the remote to the truck.

With you only having one key, you will have to go to Ford or a locksmith to make the 2nd key. I recommend calling lock smiths in your area and seeing if they have the computer to allow them to program keys.

On my '01 GT Ford wanted right at $100 to make me an extra key. My local lock smith, who works out of a 10 X 10 building made me key and programmed it for $35 and some change.

It's worth your time to call around.

test for keyless remote option

I just bought my '99 F150XLT and need to know how to find out if I have the remote entry option. I did the lock test and the horn didn't blow. My wife has a '96 Explorer with keyless remote and her didn't blow either for the same test. Is there another way to tell? Her's was factory installed also....
