Horn, Cruise Control, Clock Spring

I have a 2005 Excursion 6.0.
A few months back the horn started sounding on its' own in the night, so I pulled the fuse. Then the Cruise Control stopped working.

I have googled references to clockspring failure and these problems.

What say You?

Thanks,

John

If the clockspring is bad it opens the circuit on your steering wheel control loom and nothing works from the wheel. Equipment should still function normally, just no controls from the wheel. My horn would chirp with the remote, stereo would work from the dash etc.

Also, if your clockspring is bad your airbag light will flash several times at start up then stay on. If your airbag light is not on or flashing it's something else.

Check your harness under the dash and make sure it didn't wiggle loose.

If you do have a bad clockspring you need to make sure you get the proper one. One is a six pin with no radio controls. The other is an 8 pin with radio controls. About a 200$ difference between the two.

Keep us posted.

Same issue with horn. Except it burned fuse and the cops showed up..cruise and horn are the same fuse. Still haven't fixed mine. I swapped horns, was better for a month and then same deal. Idk.

Thanks, I guess I need to put the fuse back to have cruise control...

There are mysterious references to the airbag somehow setting off the horn...
...but I'm not so sure...

Same problem here, middle of the night the horn started honking, till battery die, we weren't home, neighbors were piss, anyway, now my horn and cruise is not working, I check fuse, blown, replace, fuse blown again? Any ideas??

Any heavy rains before it happened? Car wash?

I'm thinking something got wet...maybe windshield leaking into dash.

I'm having an issue with my horn. It started a couple of months ago when it decided to honk away. I pulled the fuse thinking it was the clock spring. I got around to replacing it this weekend but it didn't fix the problem. I'm thinking it's the actual switch sticking. If I press the horn when it's going off it will stop. Maybe I'll get to it next weekend.

John, did you try swapping the relay out?

I agree it could be the switch contacts, but it is more likely the relay is sticking. GEM has a say on when the horn activates as well.

No I haven't. I'm fairly confident it's the switch and not the relay. If I press the right side of the horn it works every time and turns off. If I use the left it sticks on, pressing the horn a few more times will eventually get it to turn off. I was too lazy to look at it today, OK I really just didn't want to disconnect the batteries.

Took it apart today. it's the horn pad only $400 locally. I saw a fix for it on the interwebs so I'll try and repair it. They also have a few f250's at the local junk yard so I'll be heading down there this weekend. They told me $5 for it over the phone if they have any. that's a big savings

Rockauto has them for $125

Pulled one out of an F150 yesterday and it works perfectly. It was very expensive $2 the lady working didn't even know what it was. I can assume they aren't a common point of failure.

I just bought a 2005 Excursion 6.0 diesel, and noticed the horn fuse had been pulled out. I replaced it as i’ve been trying to diagnose my cruise control not working. I put a fuse in last night and my horn randomly started blowing around 4a this morning. The volume and other radio controls on the right side are working but not the cruise controls on the left side. If I had a bad clock spring would it cause both to stop working? I wonder if the horn pad is my issue and the former owner just pulled the fuse to keep it quiet, not caring that it killed the cruise control.

Does that make sense? Would pulling the horn fuse cause the cruise control to stop working (indicator light won’t turn on, diagnostic mode won’t work at all)?

Happened to my 05, replaced clockspring and it did nothing, replaced airbag and everything now works. It seems both parts are now discontinued so u have to play Russian roulette with used parts. GL

I replaced horn

On my second horn replacement, fixes the problem each time. The last horn I pulled failed? closed?....each one had continuity when touching the contacts like the horn was Being blown....cruise and horn back........I replaced a clockspring a long time ago for same problem, went back later w multimeter and the old one was fine. Try checking your horns.
