Gem module
 

Hey guys new to the forum. I have a 2012 f350. From what i've found form reading on other forums, it seems I'm having problems with my gem module. Can someone please help me with the location on my 2012? Fuse box is on the passenger side of the truck. Is the gem behind it like on previous years?

what are the problems? To the best of my knowledge there is no gem module, but there are many other modules that control the electronics now.

When you step on the gas, I loose all dash, gages, radio briefly. Sometimes the air will turn on full blast before instruments come back on and doors will lock even though they are already locked. Smelled a burning electrical smell a week ago and now this started. Just not sure were to start

This sounds to me like a wiring harness chafing somewhere.


Have you checked under the hood where the wiring harness plugs into the firewall area?

Yes it's a diesel. I haven't checked the firewall yet. Just sounded like the old gem problems and was hoping some one else may have had these issues on the 6.7. I hate automotive wiring!

Trav402 - I'm sure someone has had your issue even though it's a new one for me. Like resident tech Senix said, sounds (or smells) like you have a short to find. Modules are all over the truck.

One place that is a culprit for bizarre behavior are the connectors and ground by the e-brake pedal. I'll try to get one of the FTE members that had that issue to chime in whether they ever had a smell with the problem. I don't remember any one saying they smelled burning, but a loose ground arcing could.

Do you use your ebrake/parking brake a lot?

Thanks Dakster, I do use my ebrake alot. I'm constantly loading and unloading mowing trailers in the summer. The burning electrical smell was very suddle, nothing that strong but it was definitely wiring of some sort.

IMHO, I'd check that area first... Then looking at the other easily exposed areas of wire in the truck and under the hood would be place #2. Just in case, I'd check all my fuses as well. Might be able to help you narrow down where to look if one is blown...

Not a fan of electrical issues either (who is?) as you spend hours and hours tracking it down.

I've read were wiring in front well wheels are know to chafe.

Well I figured out were the electrical smell was coming from. Phone charger was pulled out slightly and must have been arcing because the thing was melted.

I've had my truck in for the E-brake electrical issues twice. The plug keeps coming loose. they have taped it up good and so far haven't had any issues.

Glad you got the smell part figured out. It's possible the cell phone charger was your only issue.

Phone charger was probably shorting hot to ground.
