so as you might know I've been working on a 96 f250 2w that I just picked up for my son. He caught bug after I bought my first 7.3 some time ago but he had a gasser that we had just put 8" under. Anyway it spread to his buddy who is driving a Jetta by the way. Well he went and pick up a 96 7.3 of his own that needs some work but he knew that going in. Which means I got anther one to play with :) So to get to the point the guy he bought it from said it needs a torque converter and when its idling it makes a wicked noise from the bell housing area. When I give it a little gas it goes away my question has anybody run into this kind of thing before? I figured id just drop the tranny and see what's what. I'm checking with you guys first cause I get a lot of great info from this site and I appreciate it.:-jammin

I don't know but I would not run it anymore until its checked.

like I said I'm droppin the tranny before it goes anywhere. One more question. on my 96 it has a random exhaust noise that will go for 15 20 seconds its kinda hard to explain but if I give it a little fuel it goes away it kinda sound like a vacuum valve closes. I was wondering if anybody had a problem with the ebpv and had similar symptoms. not sure how to explain noise but its in the exhaust I first noticed it after cutting off the stock converter and muffler but that was 10 minutes after getting the truck home so I'm not sure that means much

I would say the noise is a cracked flex plate.

You can unplug the EBPV under the turbo and that will more than likely get rid of that noise. Just make sure the valve isn't stuck partially closed.

Or converter or internal trans...

thanks guys Ill look for all that when I get it out in the next couple of day. now on the ebpv when you say unplug it do you mean disconnecting the rod that comes out of the pedestal to the valve cause I was looking at it earlier and thinking that's what id do but it was to hot at the time. I was wondering why I couldn't find anybody talking about doing that when I was looking up ebpv bypass lots of people talk about bypassing but they remove pedestal and do all kinds of work to it but it seams to me that one could just disconnect push rod make sure its open and call it done

It's not even that complicated.

There's an electrical plug underneath the turbo. Just unplug it and you're done.

You can kind of manually push on the rod to make sure when you unplug it it's not stuck partially closed blocking exhaust flow.

looks like TC elongated the holes, maybe it wasn't on tight?

My flex plate that came off of my original motor was cracked all the way around like that. Only hairline cracks but definitely about to fail.

Is that a common failure point?

Yes.

I sold a motor to a guy last year that claimed his crankshaft "broke in two".

Turns out he had a broken flex plate.

ok unplugged ebpv and no more noise gone thanks for the info. now on the other one got the tranny out and the flex plate is fine and the inner spline has some play and spines easy in both directions thinking its the converter?

Which spins freely? If you pull the input shaft and engauge it in the converter then yes it should spin. Really the only way to tell much wrong with converter is to have a converter shop cut it open
