I am working on some 1951 and 1952 F-5, Marmon-Herrington AWD truck projects. (Like one at a time isn't enough, but it's a long story) I had the boosters rebuilt, installed new hard and soft brake lines, and new master and wheel cylinders installed. Everything bolts on in standard locations, but the breather and the one-way valve. Could anyone guide me to a site with a diagram for these items?

If you're referring to the Hydro-Vac breather, a 1/2" hose comes up through the cab floor behind the seat on the driver's side. That's where the breather cap and filter are mounted.

The vacuum check valve for the Hydro-Vac mounts to the outside firewall on the driver's side (if that's what you're referring to). I have a pic.

Here's the firewall mounted valve that was on my F-3 M-H. And I had the breather under the seat as described.

I'm interested in knowing more about the trucks you're working on, and specifics please about the shallow dished Budd wheels pictured. I'm trying to fill similar sets for myself. Stu

I am wrapping up this 1952 F-5 M-H project, which we are refurbishing. This means getting it operating safely, and looking as good as possible. The truck has a 239 flathead, 4 spd, M-H AWD, and power brakes. It was going to be a full restoration, but my girl friend has been battling cancer since May '16, so our lives have new priorities.


This truck began service as a brush fire engine in Monroe Township, MI, and was used to fight seasonal wildland fires. When I bought the truck it only had 38K miles on it, but did not come with the fire engine "bed". I knew with a 134" wb, that it could take a 9' factory flatbed, which are difficult to locate in CA.


I came across a 1953 Ford 9' step side bed, which fit the frame. I had this bed camouflaged for the 1952 F-5, by swapping the rear fenders and tailgate from a 1952 bed, and fabricating long running boards. It came out looking like a pick up on steroids. Especially, with the interesting Goodyear rims.


I found a 1959 Goodyear Rims catalog on ebay, that included these 18" rims. The rim base weighs 43.8 lbs, the side rim weighs 12.1 lbs, for a total of 55.9 lbs per rim. The tires are Firestone all terrain. I plan on taking the truck to the Pomona Swap meet on March 5th.


Any other Hydro-Vac photos would be appreciated.

Hey Jerry,
I understand that the Hydro-Vac chambers were mounted in different places, but the most common place I believe was just to the rear of the master cylinder, with the slave cylinder facing forward, and the bleed screws facing up. The vacuum check valve is held to the firewall by a threaded portion of the valve casting passing through a hole in the firewall and tightened with a large nut against a star washer on the inside (note in Stu's pic just below the voltage regulator). The threaded portion of the valve will also have a 1/8" NPT plug in it. My setup is a little different because of the two-speed axle, but the valve location is about the same.

This will take the conversation away from your hydro-vac, I'm sorry, but I need to know the full story of your 18" wheels. Did you find the complete wheels, or just the 7" x 18" Goodyear LW rims? If just the rims, what did you do for centers?

I mentioned that I'm trying to fill out some Budd sets. The sets I'm working on are 18s. I have a set of four that were originally SRW, but had had their centers moved to now be DRW. I plan to put them back to SRW. I also have three matching DRW 18s and two other true SRW 18s having a Firestone "R" rim design. I also have the pictured 7.50-18" STA traction tires to mount when a set of wheels is ready. I'm sure I have that Goodyear catalog you mentioned, but know that they only feature their rims. Not complete wheels, which would have been Budd, K-H, Accuride, or Motor Wheel products. Stu

I see that you now have the truck listed on eBay, and based on the number watching it you have a lot of interest. So before it's gone I'll ask again about those wheels. Your B7018LW is the number for the rim alone. I searched and found no record of a complete wheel matching the below picture. It has very shallow dish which is real unusual. Can you tell whether they were perhaps custom made? A place like Stockton Wheel could have produced them from pieces. Stu

Hey Stu,
These rims came on the truck when I bought it. I researched them also, because I wanted a set for my '51 F-5 M-H, but could not find anything. I went to our local Goodyear dealer and he could not find any info on them. As I wrote, I bought a '59 Goodyear catalog that included them indicating that they are Type LWD highway rim, which is where I got the info on them. I have no additional info, but willing to send photos and images from catalog.

Thanks, but I have that catalog, and there's nothing unknown about the rims. It's their combination with those center discs that look to have minimal offset. If you wouldn't mind, I'd appreciate knowing if there are any Budd numbers on the center discs or on the back side rim outer lips. Wish CA wasn't 2000 miles away, I'd come do it myself. Hey Stu,
I think you have educated me enough to make me dangerous. I looked at a set of 7 19.5" rims that I have here. Some read Firestone 19.5x6 on the outside rim, but also have Budd 76F28 on the inside. Some read Budd 19.5x6 on the outside, but also read Budd 73F16 on the outside. All of the rims have 89340 stamped on them. Therefore, my 18" Goodyear B7018LW may have a Budd number also. I'll look closely at the spare, on Friday when I bring it home.
