$17,000 for a new 6.4 in a 2010 w/ 86,000 miles?!?!

Issues continue to present themselves. Started with fuel problems and need a new pump. That is $3,300. Gave the dealer the go ahead. They get the cab off and start working on it. Now there is coolant in the turbo and exhaust is gunky. Said it is a blown head gasket, bad head, or cracked piston or all of the above. Quoted $17k for a reman crate engine and the same for a long block. If I have them start picking at it and work thru the process I'm anywhere from $8500 for turbo and labor, $1400 for a head, didn't get prices for piston, ring, and machine work if cylinder needed cleaned up. I'm guessing will be close to the same price as the other two options. Are these excessive? Anybody dealt with problems like this? Appreciate any help in advance

No personal experience like that, but for myself I would get the truck out of that dealership ASAP.

Reading your post makes me think that the EGR Cooler has ruptured, which is not a short block replacement.

Bottom line is they are scared of what the might find, get it out of there.

Seems pretty excessive to me. What is the dealer's service reputation like?

Sounds sop for ford 6.4 work.

Were you seeing signs of a head gasket leak? Was the truck blowing coolant? coolant reservoir show sign of leaking out of the cap? I'd get a second opinion. Then I would start phoning other Ford dealers and get quotes.

There are some great diesel places that could do your truck as well, I think if you mention where you are located that might help some guys point places out you could check out and get some information and phone calls to find out if they could help you.

Some dealers are really good, and other dealers not so much. This isnt like deciding if you should spend that extra 70 cents to get large fries instead of small fries, your talking a large chunk of change.

If you were going to spend that kinda of cash on a reman engine with a decent warranty and you can live with it, sure. If You are looking at a long block and it is still going to cost you that much I would look say you may want to look at bullet proofing the truck, cause if you that far down in the engine now would be the time and that would go a long way to making it last longer, something to consider.

It is a big investment either which way you go, but I would look into quotes from other Ford Dealers, reputable diesel shops not al the corner mechanic and that would mean someone who knows how to bullet proof a powerstroke. You have to have someone that knows what they are doing and isnt going to use garbage parts that are going to grenade your engine down the road. Lots of guys claim to know what they are doing and have no clue.
