Exhaust smell in cabin
 

Hello. I have a 2015 expedition XLT. Whenever the car is not moving I get a strong smell of exhaust in the cabin. It Seems to be coming through the A/C vent in that if I turn off outside air this doesn't occur.

Has anyone encountered this or know if it's a known issue?

Mine does it too, told the dealer and they checked for exhaust leaks and there are none. I checked myself also. It's obvious that if the wind is right and you are on the fresh air setting while not moving that you can suck in exhaust fumes but I agree it is worse than any other vehicle I have ever owned.

The rear air also compounds the problem since it just recircs the air in the back of the cabin. I switch to recirc if I know I'll be sitting longer than a stop light and or crack the rear vent windows once moving again to help vent out the exhaust smell.

I'm thinking about eliminating the very rear muffler/resonator and going with a piece of pipe with a turn down and out tip to increase exhaust velocity and maybe help with the problem.

Thanks for the feedback. I was beginning to wonder if this is related to the 2015 Explorers, although that seems to be when moving.

Where is the air intake located. Isn't it up around the windshield?

Yes the grooves right behind the hood, under the wipers. I believe.

It's surprising that so much exhaust could find its way so consistently up to the windshield area. Are you familiar with the explorer issue. Apparently it's due to a leak I think on the manaifold. I will check for fumes in the engine compartment.

The tailpipe for a MY16 Expedition goes straight out the back.

Does it go out towards the side on a MY15?

It goes straight out the back but I'm thinking about changing it to 45° down and 45° right.

The downward angle of the exhaust pipe is one of the repairs I have seen on the P.I.U. (Police Interceptor Utility) The police version of the Explorer. I believe the CO2 entry was extended idle periods as a major factor. The problem definitely needs to be addressed but I would tend to agree that the downward angle of the exhaust pipe should be a good start.

Another piece of troubleshooting might be to install a filter if possible maybe cut a cabin air filter to size stick it in the affected area. Might be interesting to see how much exhaust vapor or residue comes back say check after a few days. remember 45 degrees down will blow exhaust and or vapor on your clothes or shoes 45 Right could be good as long as it is behind the tires.

I personally was thinking of trading the single tip ot a smaller dual tip now that I can se there is no fairing. I actually want to make my Taurus SHO DUAL-DUAL but that dam lower valance/fairing is in the way. Where is that road crew from Overhauling or Power Nation when you need them?

I also have an Explorer and I smell the exhaust in this vehicle more than any other vehicle I've ever owned. This is when I wish there was more electric cars on the road so that I wouldn't have to breath all of that exhaust in. Plus the more electric cars that go on the road, the lower fuel costs can be for me while all those rich people drive their Tesla's. Then they can cry one day in the future when they have to take 2nd mortgage to buy batteries when they are out of warranty. :-jammin
