ZF5 shift knob part number and availability?

2 Attachment(s)
Anyone know if new ZF5 shift knobs are available and the part number/supplier? Can't find anything. NPD has the insert with teh shift pattern, better than nothing... But I'd prefer to have a whole new knob as mine is kind of beat up. I just put the new upgraded double boot on it as well as a new shift lever, would like it to be as nice as possible.

I'll also say the new double boot really silences the rollover and general transmission noise, at least compared to no boot or a clapped out old style single boot on my other truck.

Corey(?),

Call up Green Sales Company and ask them to go get a E8TZ-7213-B (they have 72 of them) and talk to them on the phone to make sure it's what you want... this is for 1988/89 (and likely onward but the catalog stops at 1989) pickups, vans & Broncos with a 5-speed transmission, 1987 is a different part number and requires a press-on insert (which is yet a different part number).

Make sure it's what you want, e.g. threaded vs press-on ball, etc.

Chris' truck parts catalog only covers 1980/89. My truck catalogs cover thru 2001.

5L5Z-7213-AA (replaced E8TZ-7213-B) .. 5 Speed Gearshift Lever Knob / Available from Ford.

1988/96 Bronco / 1988 and later F150/350, F(Super Duty) & Econoline.

MSRP: $22.25 / autonationfordwhitebearlake.com price: $14.69.

How much money will Green Sales want?

What is a "double boot" and where do I find it for my ZF?
Thanks

It has the normal outer black boot but also an inner thick white silicone feeling boot that goes over the short shift lever that bolts to the transmission. Also comes with a bezel and screws. Really quiets it down in the cab. Part number F5TZ-7277-A

How about a source or part number for the insert or bushing that goes inside the shift knob to fit tight on the splined shift level? I recall a thread here about this and seeing some on ebay or another site but I can't find one now that I need one. I recall reading that the bushing should be heater or boiled, inserted into the shift knob, then pressed onto the splined shift lever while hot so it molds to the splines then hardens as it cools.

Also be aware you can buy the ZF6 shift knob and the ZF5 shift pattern insert and just swap the insert. I believe the shift knob was around $15 and insert around $5, much cheaper than gambling on whether the "correct" part number was the original style or the later replacement that is totally different.

The shift knob is somewhat soft, use push the insert out from the back (shift lever) side and insert the new one. I'm not sure if this is how the original ZF5 shift level was or if this is just a very similar shape but a softer material molded with a texture. I've never seen a ZF5 shift knob that felt at all soft or had any appreciable texture on it, but they have all been 20-30 years old so maybe hardened and worn smooth. Either way, this knob is close enough for me, I just need the insert so I can install it.

Thank you for this part number! As well as the one from dummy for the knob. Ford is also offering these on Amazon. The knob is 3 dollars cheaper and the boot is 30! plus some prime shipping. Excited for my cab to quiet down and for the fumes to stop giving my wife a headache, along with the pain in the palm of my hand to go away.

Older thread, I know, but you sir are my hero!

I needed a new shift knob bad and just didn't like the looks of the all black replacements, so I ordered the 6 speed one and have an insert on the way as well.

They're still out there for $5 plus shipping.

I know this is an old thread, but incase someone comes looking through this in the future, I have another option. Dorman sells a shift knob that fits right on top of the ZF5 transmission shift lever. Part number 926-328.

It comes all black but it's pretty easy to paint if you want to. I went with red for mine.

I actually bought the ZF6 speed one and a new insert. The parts should arrive soon.

Not as smooth as the original was, but looks like it belongs there.
