Starter bolt sizes
 

I've got an 85 ranger 4x4. 2.8v6 that i picked up for nothing. Needs a LOT of work. Decided to start with the starter (pun intended) as it didn't have one.

I've got the starter, but i'm trying to figure out what size and thread of bolt I need to install it.

Auto parts store was unable to help, and local ford dealer's service dept. is closed on weekends (go figure). Anyone know off hand, or able to point me to a good reference?

I would hate to guess since half of them are metric now. I would eyeball some of the other bolts on the engine (like a alt bracket bolt or something), and see if it will fit thread wise. It should have a good fit in the threads, with no slop. If you do find one that fits, measure how thick the starter flange is, and get a bolt twice that thickness(approximately). Take the bolt that fits down to the hardware store, and try their selection of nuts till one fits. Then you will know the thread pitch and if it's metric, and then you will know what bolt to buy.

i suppose that's what i'll have to do. I think i've got a can of bolts around somewhere, perhaps i'll just have to dig through that.
