Hey, dumb question, I live in the land of CNG stations, could I run an irrigation engine?
 

or is that not advised because of the varied rpms I'd turn? (Most industrial engines run at a constant RPM) Not for a hot rod, just my '73 F100 with a C6. If I could, and add a Gear Vendors.... that would be sweet.

It came up on my local Craigslist search, but was in Omaha, NE so I wouldn't get it right now anyways, don't have money shooting out of my patooty. We're a little south of the big irrigation area, that's usually Kansas and north.

But it just got me thinking, in the OKC metro area, we have many CNG stations, I pass 4 in my 22 mile drive to work. My F100 is a long bed with a 360, a CNG 428 would be pretty cool in it backed by the C6, and like I said, throw a OD on that....

There are often used CNG tanks that come up for sale on Craigslist, we don't have vehicle inspections, although it should burn cleaner than gasoline.

I've kicked around the idea of buying a CNG Crown Vic and use the 8.8, do the front suspension swap and replace the 360/C6 with the 4.6/4R7xx anyways, but keeping it FE would be inherently cooler, plus the CNG stuff would be about the same vintage.

In fact, I guess I could find someone that bought an irrigation engine and get the CNG stuff off them I guess, I have spare FE parts laying around, it might be a 390 instead of a 428....

Besides the fuel system, I believe the biggest difference is the cylinder heads. With the dry fuel, valves/guides/seals need to be set up differently to live. Also compression can be higher with the high "octane" fuel but not essential.

It would be a bit of a science/engineering project... hope you post any updates.

Well, what I hear most guys do is swap heads and intake to run gasoline. It would be interesting to do, like I said in my last line, to get said heads and intake from them as well as the rest of the stuff. Now I would imaging they are probably really low compression stuff and may not work, but from everything I've heard, industrial engines running on NG are really clean inside.

My 79 F250 with 351m was kitted with a CNG system. Unfortunately, there's no filling stations local to me, i'd have to drive 45 minutes which would negate the benefits of the CNG. I've since taken it off. Would be cool running in the HOV lanes with a 79 that's known as a gross polluter.
