I just bought my first diesel truck, a 2001 7.3 with 148,000 miles
 

I own a diesel tractor but am new to the trucks. So far I have installed the 3/1 leveling kit, new rims and tires, and a decent radio. The truck was all stock when I bought it. Any input and suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

What is the truck primarily use?

I have a mechanical diesel tractor too.
Bought a Ford since my tractor buddies recommended the 7.3 engine for pulling my 7k 5th wheel.

Welcome to the oil burner club. If you do your own repairs a scanner is a must have. Some are under 20 bucks including the android app. Or you can use a PC too if BT enabled. With out it you are blind to what the real issue is. Lots here seen people spend thousands or more before finding the right part to change out.

This is my daily driver, family vehicle, and work truck. Any maintenance suggestions, as well as upgrades will be appreciated. Of course, longevity is also very important. I will try to post a couple of pictures tomorrow. Thanks again.

All fluids changed first, fuel filters, and depending if you still have the stock square air box might want to look into an OEM Ford AIS, S&B, or a 6637 air filter mod.

I got a new to me 2001 f350 a few weeks ago. And with the patient helpful group here I'm sorting it out slowly. You wouldn't think it but it is a fairly steep learning curve going diesel and I'm just a few days ahead of you. In fact I think I'm well over 100 posts in less than a month.:D

As soon as you get a couple weeks under your belt they open up the signature box to list out all the specifics of your truck. Once that is opened up to you your life will become much easier here. Answering what you have over and over again gets a bit old. Specially for us challenged typists. Great group here so enjoy and ask away... and congrats on the new ride! :-X22

I have the receipts for a 2700.00 transmission rebuild at 146,000. I changed the fuel filter, oil and filter, and air filter. I have heard of the 6637 intake mod. Is there a tutorial with pictures somewhere?

All you need is a piece of 4" by 4" long pcv pipe or exhaust pipe, a worm clamp, and the filter I'll take a pic of one in a sec.

I suggest looking at your tranny cooler. Is it still stock?

He's got the year model that the tranny cooler lines run thru the rad I wouldn't worry too much, but still a good investment if he buys the 6.0 transcooler.

Consider changing the fluid in the differential as well as flushing the power steering (ATF) fluid. Check the brake fluid to see if it is burnt or still good.

I bought my first diesel truck about 2.5 years and 20K miles ago when it had 220,000 miles. Since then I have driven it all over the north Georgia mountains and from GA to Seattle and back towing our travel trailer.

Know your own personal limits and don't get tempted to step into something that is too big of a mod or too big for your budget. Only you know what is right for you, your family and your truck. Start reading, take notes and continue reading. I have learned so much over the past 2 years and made some good friends here.

Take a look at the signatures of the guys that are posting and search the terms they are using. There is nearly 2 decades of information here and you are not the first to have questions. Have fun, keep it simple and enjoy the legendary 7.3 as much as you can.
