Steering wheel swap

How difficult is it to swap out the 2006 steering wheel for an 08+ wheel? How hard is it to put the 08+ steering column in, do they bolt up.?

I would take a trip to the local wrecking yard and see if they will let you
do some snooping around around to see what is what.

Sounds like the best option. I'll give it a shot and see if there are any around me.

I thought :-huh:-huh:-huh the columns were different - or perhaps the thread is different, either way, I believe the wheels aren't interchangeable w/o swapping the columns ...

I believe they are different, my main concern was how difficult it would be to swap the two

Dropping the column out of out truck is not that hard of a job
from reading the manual on our series of trucks. The newer one I
don't have a clue on. The other thing to look at is the wheel switches.
On ours they use a resistor element to reference voltage to let the
system know what switch has been pressed. Did Ford change that
after 07I don't know. Then there is pin assignments in plugs. Will
they be the same is the plug shape and pin type/size the same?
Well worth finding out before you get half way in or are to the no
turning back point in a project.

Get a set of wiring diagrams for your truck and the one your getting
the parts from. Even if the pins are not in the same slots that is an easy
fix if they are the same pin type and size. That way your not doing any
cutting to match things up. Also one circuit that you NEVER want aftermarket
splicing done is the Airbag firing circuit. The reason is two fold.
(1) there is a shorting bar in the plugs so that when they are disconnected the
pins are shorted so that you don't have a bag going BOOM do to static.
(2) You don't want a non factory splice to fail when you need the Airbag to
go off. Also the module that controls the Airbag tests it and if the wire
has different resistance it will give you an error and deactivate the system
(SRS) if I recall correctly.

I can get you the 06 wiring diagrams but don't have the newer stuff yet
if ever. I just have not had the reason. Let me know what year you looking
at for the donor and I'll see if I can get my hands on the documents. No
guarantee on that. The newer the truck the more the documents cost.
