Having a nervous breakdown over the low beam!
 

Hi all

I'm a newb here but looking for some friendly advice before I have to start taking Prozac. Please keep in mind I'm not anywhere near being a mechanic.

Here's the problem I am having on my 2002 F250 SD 5.4L for the last month:

1. the passenger low beam went out on me, so being the good F250 owner I am I went to the auto store came home and replaced both bulbs.
2. all good, all headlights working as they should.
3. Coming home from the lumber yard after a job and get pulled over by the local PD because I had one headlight out - guess which one? Yes, the passenger side.
4. Got home, found a spare bulb replaced it. Worked. Then it didn't! Checked fuses, relays etc. - they are all fine.
5. After a few more bulb changes decided to replace the socket. Did that. Worked until I turned off the engine. Then passenger low beam didn't work after I restarted it.
6. I had ordered new headlight assemblies so I was waiting for them to come in anyway. They came with new bubs. Changed them out at my friends shop. All headlights worked. By the time I get home I noticed the passenger side low beam stopped working - again.
7. Back to the shop. Checked all the electrical I could. Took apart the lamp socket again and re-wired it all from the beginning. Passenger low beams were working again.
8. Get up last Saturday, checked the lights - guess what - passenger low beam not working - again!

Now I have replaced bulbs, checked everything with a multimeter (getting voltage), replaced the socket, replaced the headlight assemblies, checked for any loose wiring and all the other normal things you would do.

Why is my SD messing with my head? Should I splice and join the wire from the driver side low beam to the passenger side low beam?

I'm at the end of my tether with this one. Its got me all messed up so any thoughts on fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

You say that you checked all voltages, but have you checked the ground for that headlamp ??? The ground for the passenger side headlamp is G108, which is located on the passenger front fender just forward of the ESOF solenoid. Check to make sure it is clean & tight and the crimp is not loose or rotted.

Have you checked for power at the socket when the bulb is not working ??? If you have power there, and the bulb is not lighting, and you know the bulb is good, then you DEFINATELY have a ground problem. Check for voltage on the black wire---If you have voltage there, then you have a grounding problem.

Well its not the bulb. it has to be a ground or most likely everytime you go near there you move the wire/connector..there is a problem in the wire connector area.. plug er in and wiggle everything. wires can have hidden breaks in them as can connectors...

Stupid question but did you touch the glass part of the bulb with your hands?

Not a stupid question, it fits the situation as something else to be aware of.

Ground more than likely. Ours blew out 2 55watt hid ballasts on one side. Found the ground to be dirty. Took it off cleaned contact areas for ground, and tightened everything back up. No more issues!
