IFS Pivot bushings, How done? special tool required?
 

I have to do the Radius arm and Axle Pivot bushings. I believe I need to pull the complete IFS out from under the truck to do the pivot bushings, True?

Do I need a "special tool" for Pivot bushings?
Has anyone done this already and am I in for it on this one?

The complete axle doesn't have to come out for the pivot bushings, but it would help. I just took it loose in the center but it does put up a fight and the axles tend to keep swinging up in the way. If you are going to do the radius arm bushings without grinding the rivets, then you will have the outside part of the axle loose and it might make it easier.

I was able to drive the old bushings out with a punch and a hammer. But I could not get the new ones in that way. I ended up rigging my own "tool" to press them in. It ended up being a large cup with a 1/2" hole in the middle and a large thick washer with a 1/2" hole, and a piece of 1/2" all thread. I put the cup on one side, put the bushing on the other side and then the thick washer on top of the bushing. I slid the all thread through all of this with nuts on each side. Was then able to squeeze all this together and press the bushing into the arm.

Not grinding rivets (I think) Rivets are for the Radius arm brackets, true?
Just doing bushings.

Yes, if you don't grind the rivets and take the radius arm brackets off the frame, then you have to take the front axle loose and take a come along and pull it forward to slide the radius arm out of the radius arm frame bracket to replace the bushings.

I'm just done a SAS whenever TTB parts are worn out... But a sweet trick I learned for removing bushings is to drill out teh rubber part with a bit just a little smaller than the distance between inner and outer shell, drill all around it, knock the center out with a hammer/punch, then sawzall and pry out the outer shell. Wire wheel the inside if crusty and install new bushing.

Aside from that... Yeah TTB stuff is a pain, recommend SAS. Same money, a little more work of a half ton, and better result.
