Stock seat question

For those of you that reupholstered your seat in the stock style, how wide did you make the bolster on the seat back?

Here is a copy of the 1954 Ford Truck full color catalog to see what I mean. What I mean is how wide is the vinyl fabric at the top of the seat back?

If it was mine I would eye it up with the spot on the door regardless of the dimension

Hi Abe, I covered my 53 F100 seat with the all vinyl "stock" upholstery offered by Mid Fifty. They used to write in their catalogs that the real stock fabrics was a combo of plain vinyl and some sort of vinyl weave material, but that the vinyl weave was either not available or too pricey. Anyway, if one assumes that the overall pattern is stock, and that this pattern didn't change in 1954, then that fabric change occurs about 8" from the top of the bench seat back. It's a tad hard to measure exactly because of the rounded top of the seat back. Didn't I read that you had a NOS seat cover?

Good idea but the seat is out of the truck.

Yes, I answered your question in my rebuild thread. I sprung for the more expensive NOS fabric. It wasn't that much more I didn't think. Some guys spend more on their wheels, custom interior, or stereo system. So a stocker has got to spend some extra money somewhere! I splurged on my seat fabric!

Now my big dilemma is shall I cover the seat as a Deluxe cab with the bolster (it is pretty) or as the Standard Cab (which is what my truck is) without the bolster?

Here is the catalog illustration of the Standard cab seat:

Abe did you do it yourself or send it to a upholstery shop? Also I wana do a carpet any recommendations? Thinking of mid 50s

If you accept that the bench seat upholstery kit has the same proportions as the panel truck seats, the upper red vinyl is 6.5" top to bottom of the seam. This 53-56 seat cost me $1 at auction a few years ago. Stu

I tore the old seat covering off, took it to a local guy to get it sandblasted and primed. Then I fixed the broken seat Z-springs and then painted the springs and frame with a finish coat. Check Abe's 54 Rebuild Thread for pics of the above.

Tomorrow I take it to John Stoltzfus, a transplanted Lancaster County Amishman that does upholstery.

Stu, that is an unbelievable great buy! Do you still have that seat or did you sell it for big bucks? And it is in such great shape too. Is it the driver's seat or the optional passenger seat?

I will assume that the pattern dimensions for the bench seat and the panel truck seat are the same. And I will assume that the 53 seat, which yours is, is the same as the 54.

PS: I added a pic above of the standard cab seat.

Yup, good buy. Driver's side, still have it. Too bad the lower upholstery wasn't in good shape. Stu

I would go for the deluxe seat. That will look sharp in your truck. I think a seat upholstered like that would look good in my '49.

So guys, what color is that seat?
It seems that all stock trucks had the same seat color, red on the sides and a brown/tan seat?
I'm trying to figure out what way to go with my seat. For it to look good with my Sea Sprite Green truck, I was thinking just to go all black and use a cloth instead of vinyl.
But every one is see seems to have the same color combo.
It's hard to tell from the pictures exactly what color it is.

Joe,

here are pics of '54, '55, and '56 stock seats. They are all woven vinyl that breathes. The 53 trucks had vinyl much like Stu's panel truck seat. The standard cab did not have the bolster at the top.

Here is a drawing of a standard and a deluxe cab seat for 54:

I have brochures that show the 55 and 56 Deluxe Cab seats which I would have to scan and put on here later. The 55 Custom Cab had two colors of material depending on the color of the truck. But I believe your truck is a Standard Cab.

I vote to go with the NOS material!
