LED headlight, which ones and are you happy ?
 

I'm considering LED's for my 99 Ranger, but there is so many choices. Wondering which ones you guys are using, and if your happy with them ? Brighter, coverage area, etc. ? Thanks !!!!

There is no legal, let alone safe aftermarket, plug and play LED headlight bulb for motor vehicles. This is because, and just like those illegal on public roadways in all 50 states, Canada and Mexico HID's that people buy on ebay and install in a fixture designed for an incandescent bulb, the light fixture is engineered to produce the correct light scatter pattern with a specific bulb, not just and bulb tha happens to fit in the hole. Not only are these aftermarket bulbs illegal per FMVSS108 and specifically by the law of this state, it's worth realizing that if it were legal, companies that make bulbs (Sylvania, Philips) would be ALL OVER IT, making and selling a legal solution to drivers. But, they are not.

Your options are, and provided you want to operate on legally on public roadways and not blind oncoming traffic (and risk them hitting you head on) is:

a) clean, good headlight fixtures, clean windshield, and don't turn the dash light up and make it look like a runway.

b) Sylvania SilverStar Ultras. No, not the garbage on ebay or Harbor Freight that has blue paint on the bulb (this approach REDUCES light output) but rather, a bulb designed to produce actual 4300K light.

c) Although it would be a great fight in court and probably a win because most judges and prosecutors aren't well versed on the matter, go out and do a quality HID conversion. This involves buying projector assemblies, retrofitting them to youyr existing or new headlight fixture if the lenses are toast, installing the HID bulb in the projector (the only legal way and your trump card in court) and aligning them so as to function properly. BTW, everything said above also applies to fog light. Those obnoxious LED cubes that blind oncoming traffic, illegal for use on public roads.


*It's very important to remember that just because something is for sale on the internet doesn't mean it's legal or cause problems for other people sharing the road with us. Off road......do whatever one wants to. :D
