Dip stock problems......
 

Hey guys i got an 84 f 150 with what i was told was a 79 model motor 300 6 the dip stick is infront of the distributor and when i put it in is sounds like its hitting the oil pan and deflectiong and sometimes it will come up and you can hear it hitting the crank and it wont read the oil....it seems like its hitting the side of the pan and not getting into the oil ...could it be a newer oil pan....it seems like on my 86 the dipstick went in twards the back of the motor...

You can't put a front stick car engine with a rear sump oil pan.
Just get a plug for the hole In the timing case.

Does the replacement oil pan have a spot to fit a dipstick tube?

Aye... sounds like a car engine in a truck - but a truck requires a rear-sump oil pan in order to clear the crossmember... trying to take an oil level reading from the front won't work....

I forget how the truck-mounted 6-banger handles that from the factory, it's gonna be either an oil pan with accommodations for a dipstick tube in the side, or the dipstick tube is inserted into the side of the block someplace... but I totally forget how the factory did that in the trucks....

The dipstick enters the block, just above the oil pan and is located between the oil pressure sender and the oil filter.

Do you know if a car block would be drilled here, or does the block just have an unmachined pad?

I do not know, Jim. The 300 was never offered in an automobile, but the 240 was. If the OP engine is a 300, perhaps the problem originates with the fact that the frames were changed in 1980 or the engine came from a 4-wheel drive configuration and is in a 2 wheel drive [or vice-versa]? I am just guessing on the latter.

I just looked @ RockAuto... the 1979 300 engine has a mid-sump oil pan. The 1980-1986 300/4.9L has a rear sump oil pan.
