Highest original IDI motor ever ? seen still going

Just curious, I am seeing the early PS 7.3 rack up over a million easy if taken care of.

One guy I talked to about buying a PS had 330,000 miles on his which was mostly highway and had from his report 0 problems ever before he sold it, just routine maintenance.

tjc transport 01-01-2016 01:22 PM

i have a little over 494,000 miles on my 88 and it has never been opened up. just routine repairs like lift pump, glow plugs, injectors and injector pumps, water pumps, CDR valves, 1 oil cooler rebuild, and filters.

I'd say that the information will be murky. The problem is, aside from a few people(like Tom), most have IDIs that have been sold at least once. Because the counter only goes up to 99,999, keeping track of the number of rollovers is a matter of each seller being honest.

This is opposed to the PS and later, where the odometer will accurately track 1M+, so it's a lot easier to know, and there's more data out there.

BTW, my mom's 02 PSD has 363K on it, 99% of which we put on, and the engine's still going strong. It does need a new set of injectors at this point, though...

Realslowww 01-01-2016 05:12 PM

363 thou with no new parts ? they originally designed the IDI for a RATING OF 300 grand. I see PS going toward 1.5 million. What would make the first gen PS last so much longer.

How much back up stuff should you really have to keep a PS going. Computer, injectors and position sensor ? I have 3 IDI's and was thinking about becoming a traitor and going codes.

tjc transport 01-01-2016 05:32 PM

no backup parts needed, because you really don't know what is going to go bad until it does.
a lot of PS owners keep a CPS in the glove box.

Thing to remember here is that an IDI is a lot sloppier and parts are a ton cheaper. Things like the fuel system is considered a wear item and needs to be replaced a lot sooner than on a Powerstroke, but it's a /ton/ cheaper. For the cost of a set of injectors on a Powerstroke, you can replace the pump and injectors at least once if not twice.
I'm going to say that an IDI will generally last as long as you maintain it. As long as you put new oil and such in it, the rings, bearings etc aren't likely to 'fail'.
They do get worn, but the engine's designed for that in a way -- you might get a rod knock, and drive it for another 50-100K.
It also depends on how much performance you want out of it -- for good performance, you probably do want to rebuild the motor around 3-400K depending on how it's doing. My own motor would have probably done another 100K or more, but it was feeling tired and just didn't have as much power down low. So I spent $3K on a rebuild. It runs much better now that it's got fresh rings and valves in it, and no bore taper.

I personally will stick with IDIs because it /doesn't/ have any computer or codes. When things go bad, you can generally hear it and fix it. Or ignore it and hope it goes away...
You don't have crap like the main wiring harness on a PSD rubbing against the valve cover and causing an intermittent loss of an entire bank of cyls.
Things on an IDI tend to either work or they don't. And its simple enough to troubleshoot.

Million miles or not its tired, i dont care what it is. John Deere claims 18k hours for and engine rebuild. Our 4040 has 22k and the 4250 has 31k. We have an old 1256 that probably has 50-60k hours on it. If its below 100* you have to ether it to start it, but it still runs. Probably has 40hp instead of 120hp but it runs. My brother in law had an 01 cummins with 485k on it, almost beat it with my NA 7.3 in my 79 which is heaver and has taller gears. There are plenty of IDIs with over 500k, though was more common with the older members that dont seem to be around much. Theres a guy up the road that has an S series international with a 6.9 with 800k on it. I was going to buy it for a core, he said bring 2 cans of ether, it was august, but it still runs.

My point is, your point, is pointless. The IDI was designed for a 250k mile service life. Thats pretty damn respectable, especially considering a gas engine with 60k is considered "high mileage". Back in the 50,60s,70s, you were lucky to get 40-100k out of a gas engine if you lived around here.

I pulled a gauge cluster out of an 89 7.3 idi in the scrapyard with 690 000 miles on it, was a flat bed dually, had 24 leaves in total on the back axle lol

how do you know it had 690k on it? the odometer on the 89 reset back to zero at 100k.

Realslowww 01-02-2016 10:20 AM

I was looking at a van on Utube with a claimed 1.4 million on a PS.

Cuz the odometer said 690k? Not all the odometers roll back...... My 88 doesnt either, its.at 290k

Miles or km?

pat420swed 01-02-2016 10:31 AM

Heres two other gaugeclusters ive got laying around, dont have the one from the 89 as i only took the tach out of it, one of these is from an 89 as well tho and i know that for a fact cuz the guy i got the cluster from showed me the ownership for the truck, the other one is from a 91 which i also had the ownership for when i bought it for parts.

The one with 400k was from a 89 and the other was from the 91

Odometer is not directly tied to engine type. The '92-'94 IDIs have the same odometer as the PSDs. And they DON'T go to 999,999. They roll back to 300,000 after 399,999.

As for the sixth digit on the older trucks, the medium-duty trucks (F650, etc) often came with six-digit (not including the tenth) odometers, and they sometimes get swapped into the pickups. That's the only way you'll see one in a pickup, though. Since these had mechanical wheels for the digits, they went all they way to 999,999.
