Dana 60 Differences

I have a 1988 F-350 4x4, and I'm needing a new hub. I dont know if the dana 60 has changed at all over the years other than the switch between the king pin and ball joint axles. My question is whether or not the hubs have changed at all from year to year. I've found a dana 60 from a friends 2002 f350 that a tree fell on in a recent storm, and he said he would sell the axle to me for $250.

I'm looking at all my options here, his truck is running 4.10 gears and mine is 4.56, but if the gears are interchangeable, I would just swap the entire axle in, if not, but the hubs are, I'd change out the hubs.

I'm buying the axle either way, but I would like to know if anyone has any knowledge about this offhand.

don't bother. that axle will not fit in your truck, and none of the parts are interchangeable.

Okay, thanks. What year did the axle change?

Might want to double check that axle. Many SuperDuty trucks still used the Dana 50 in 2002.

in 01 they changed things

99-01 SRW F250, and F350s used Dana 50s
99+ DRW F350s used Dana 60s
02+ F250/F350s got dana 60s
Excursions used dana 50s from 99-05

But the easiest way to tell them apart is the pinion nut.
Dana 50 is 1-1/8"
dana 60 is 1-5/16"

'01 SRW F-250 and F-350s are Dana 50. They started putting the D60 in the SRW trucks midway through the 2002 MY.

My bad, 02

As far as the hub goes all the 80-97 front D60s and D50TTBs use the same hub. Just grab one off a F250 with a D50TTB, cheap and plentiful.

Nope. The 50 and 60 use different hubs. There is about 1/4" difference between them

I'll see if I can dig up the pic

The picture says you can use the same hub, just not spindles...

This ^^^

Hubs, bearings, rotors, lockout hubs, and calipers are the same.

Awesome!! Thanks for all the good information!

This may be a dumb question, but I assume that they ran a 8 lug on the 50 as well correct? If so, I'll run to the junkyard once I get a chance and pull one.

Yup, all F250s of this era are 8x6.5, not all 4WD F250s are D50s though. If it's a F250 4WD and a regular cab it will have a TTB but that TTB is likely to be a D44HD. They are 8 lug but smaller, easy to spot the hub protrusion is smaller in diameter. Also 80-85 F350s will have the D50 as well.

easy way to tell a D44 from a D50-D60 :
if the locking hub is slightly smaller than the mounting flange, it is a D44. if the locking hub is the same size as the mounting flange, it is a D50 or D60
