6r140 shift problems

I'm having problems with my 6r140 in my 2011, the truck is an early build around 8/2010 I believe.

After cold soak when shifting into reverse after allowing engine to warm a bit the transmission almost always slams hard into reverse.

After that shifting from 1-3 is awful, the transmission will try to go into 3rd but downshift to 1st then fail to go back into 3rd multiple times. This situation is extremely dangerous when trying to pull into traffic.

Oh and once the transmission gets into 3rd it will skip 4th and go right into 5th.

There is only 94k miles on this transmission/truck.

I just bought this truck about a month ago and am starting to get really pissed off, does this sound like an issue with the solenoids in the valve body?

I'm very mechanically inclined and can swap them if need be but now we're talking few hundred in solenoids and then getting the trucks pcm flashed right?

Also fluid has been changed and I used mercon lv.

start with checking for codes on the trans.

It sounds like the solenoids are the issue..but which one is causing it? That is why I would first scan for codes.

The skipping of gears maybe related.

I will scan the truck asap, will post back with results

Happy thanksgiving

happy thanks giving to you and your family as well.

I had a similar problem, plus it wanted to start out in 5th gear. Dealer replaced the solenoids, and all has been good. This happened with in 3 months after I got the truck.

Ok guys, so today the truck was really bad when cold. It also wanted to start in 4th gear and for the first time threw a wrench icon on the dash.

I turned the truck off and restarted at the next stop and the wrench disappeared.

I hooked up a scanner to the data link connecter and surprisingly had no codes. I also got an oasis report which indicated there has been no service work done on the truck other than some type of abs flash.

Ford wants at least $100 just to hook up a snap on modis ultra, I can't bring myself to pay that when that $100+ could go towards the actual issue. Which I'm still thinking could be solenoids but I have also seen the early 6r140's had pump problems and will lose prime after cold soak.

How do you guys feel about this?

Rod bensken, roughly how many miles were on your truck when this issue started happening?

senix 11-28-2015 05:56 PM

depending upon your scanner you may not be able to read the codes.

Ok update, ford says the 3 high solenoids need to be replaced and then a flash installed and it should fix my issue.

They want to charge $400+ in labor plus the solenoids and fluid+filter.

That to me is ridiculous, I can change these solenoids in an hour. The only thing is that I don't have the ford software to flash my tcm/pcm.

Is there anyone that has done this repair or that knows if I replace the solenoids with the SAME band number that is removed, will the truck drive and shift to the dealer for the flash? Or is the flash even necessary?

kper05 12-02-2015 08:15 PM

I am fairly certain this is a TSB. Does Ford typically charge for TSB's out of warranty? The TCM firmware is necessary. This exact thing was done to my truck after 30,000+ miles of Ford troubleshooting and firmware updates and it made it like a new truck.

senix 12-02-2015 08:17 PM

TSB is not covered under any special warranty.

Thanks, wasn't sure.

It's a known issue that Ford is 100% aware of. If my notes are correct, see attached PDF.

Well what do you know, there's a note in that document about it being covered only under the new vehicle warranty. Of course I would ask and find the doc 10 minutes later!

senix 12-02-2015 08:33 PM

if it helps...I think it should be covered just like a recall. Obviously there is an issue or they would not have come up with a fix.

Ford should at least cover parts even if you have to pay the tech labor. It's actually a big issue. There were more times than I care to remember where the truck would become useless when switching from 2nd to 3rd.
Pulling onto a highway, into the middle of an intersection...it would high rev as if in neutral, sometimes stay that way until you let off or slam into 3rd at 3,000 RPM. I am surprised no one rear ended me at times.

powerstroker100 12-02-2015 08:37 PM

Thanks for the replies guys. I have seen the 11-7-10 tsb I only wish this was covered under some type of warrenty but my truck has about 94,500 miles on it now.

Kper05 did you experience some of the issues that I am having with my transmission?

Even if the solenoids fix only 70% of my problems I'll be happy, I just can't believe I'm going to have to pay around $700+ for this repair when it's something so simple.
