460 build
All right people, I'm looking for ideas as to build a 460 for my mud drag truck. Do I go with a big cube big stroker, big cube small stroke, what do I do. I know a 514 from Ford would do but I don't have an open checkbook. What block, heads, crank, does, etc. Any ideas will be great. Thanks!

I'm unfamiliar with what a mud drag truck is, but it sounds fun. Stroke length is going to be largely what you want for an RPM range, and how long you are looking for the motor to last. If you are going with a carbureted motor(i ass ume), going with D0VE heads its hard to go wrong. For real high end potential you have to go to aftermarket heads, or try to find PI, or SCJ/CJ heads which isnt easy or cheap. Regardless of what heads you go with, pick your pistons and deck the block accordingly for what compression ratio you want, and run straight up cam timing. Picking the right cam for a mud truck is crucial, so take time to study your options.

460 build
Mud drags is what it sounds like, drag racing 4 wheel drives in a mud lane. Usually around 150 to 200 foot lanes. And yes it is a lot of fun. Have a buddy that swears by big bore short stroke. That's what he runs but in a pulling truck. Don't know if that will work for me that's why I'm asking. Just trying to get the most bang for my pennies. Ultimate find would be a NASCAR 427 but yea right. Got better chance winning the lottery. Any info on parts and locations would be a big help. Thanks!

How high of RPM's will you be running? A stock 460-472, with D0VE heads can go quite a ways, but if you want upwards of 700hp, a stroker kit is necessary. a 514 is a mild compromise that you can still get higher range RPM's out of. I would take a look for a stroker kit like that or just find a D3 block with D0VE heads with a stock crank, and build that however you want, for a little cheaper.
