Thinking of purchasing a 13 or 14 Escape
I just saw this forum. I am on the site twice a day and don't slowly come down the page. I am usually on the 61-66, 67-72, and FE engine forum.
OK, Only Blue ovals sleep in my yard and we don't replace them often. Just sold a 97 Taurus GL with 180,000 miles and have another with 165,000 miles. We are looking at a 2013 or 14 Escape S or SE. Mama likes the body stile so we are going to see if we can find one that will match the cash pile that we have. I am a little hesitant to buy the Ecoboost just because I worry that 10 years from now we could have a $5000.00 melt down and I'd be 76 then and likely not prepared to deal with it. So I'm leaning on the 2.0 EFI. I see very little difference in the mpgs. At my age tire smoking is in my rear view. What is the views of you guys on turbos and high mileage? John :-X06 |
I've had a few turbo vehicles over the years and as long as you use the correct oil you'll be fine. A good thing to do before turning the vehicle off is to let it idle for about 30second to 1 minute to let everything cool down.
Like most things on vehicles the turbo setups have come a long way and are more reliable than ever. And as far as replacement, OEM would be my last choice. There are companies that make replacements that will far exceed quality and output than what is on there now for much less money. |
I know turbos have been around a while. It's the everyday grandma use that I am concerned about. The wife’s sister has one but she will replace her car before we will.
How many miles are put on turbos trouble free? John :-X06 |
I would not worry too much about the turbos. For my 3.5 Ecoboost the turbos are $700 apiece, not sure how much they are for the 2.0.

I have a Ram with 255k miles on it original turbo. My Eclipse was at 75k but I upgraded that one to a larger- no shaft play in the factory though. And I have several friends that ran well, over 150k in their cars with no issues.

Thanks Scott. I had no idea of the longevity of the turbo. I read very little difference in gas mileage in any of the 3 engines listed. You should let it smooth out before shut down.
So what is the appeal of the turbo. John :-X06 |

We were able to find a 13 S non turbo, 30,000 miles that pretty much was what we wanted for the money that we had to spend, so mama has a new car, and is happy happy happy.
I luv being able to get in and out without the pain like I have with my 97 Taurus. John :-X06 |
Congrats on the purchase.

Congratulations. They are a lot easier to get in and out of than a Taurus I know from experience. Pictures ???

Just recently I purchased a 2014 Escape with the 1.6 Eco-boost (turbo) and 4WD. Gas mileage is in the low 20's with mostly in town driving. I haven't taken it on a longer trip so I don't know about over the road gas mileage. I love the vehicle - its much easier to get into and out of than my former 2008 Milan.

Love my 2014 Escape S 2.5L - not one issue with the motor. It is not fast but I don't have to worry about the turbo and it can move when pushed.

From a current owner of 2010 Ford Escape, I would recommend going with either Toyota Rav 4 or Hyundai Tuscan.
Would not recommend a Escape based on amount of things I have to change or had issues with |
As a current owner of a 2014 Escape, this is a quite different vehicle compared to the 2010 model. According to Consumer Reports, the frequency of repair rate is much lower for 2014 Escapes and the variety problems is also much less. While I haven't owned a pre-2013 Escape, the current generation seems to be much better.

Times have changed
I could not agree with you more. The Louisville plant where the Escape is made won an award in 2013 for quality control when they launched the Escape with the new body style. There is a serious difference between the previous generation's reliability and build quality and the current model's. I'm sorry that the 2010 Escape has soured his opinion of the brand. I suggest that you sell it outright or trade it in on a new Escape. You will not be disappointed.
Just rolled over 29K on our 2014 S and we have no issues. The battery is tough to get to but I've got it figured out now. Changing the cabin air filter took 2 minutes for the YouTube video and 2 minutes to figure it out. One item of note... I changed the front wipers after 2 years of ownership but think that I may not have had to. There was no streaking, no noise and no loss of wiping quality. Our car is parked outside and is exposed to the weather every day. I hope that my next set of wipers lasts 2 years like the first set. Not bad.:oval:oval |
