Fuel gauge not working

So I've had this '03 250 superduty v10 for about a month. I was told about the fuel gauge before I bought it. I decided that I would put a fuel pump and sending unit in. After installation I have the exact same issue. Sometimes the needle says 3/4 full when its full, and sometimes it says empty.. sometimes it happens while im driving down the road. At this point i'm guessing it is a short. Does anyone know of any common issues with the fuel gauge and associated system?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jim

Jim,
I have never read on the forum that this is a typical problem.

For an intermittent electrical problem such as this, I would have started by just checking the signal from the sending unit to the instrument cluster. That may have saved you the money from buying those components.

Rather than a short in the circuit, I would assume this is an intermittent open or low/high resistance connection (depending on how the gauge works) between the sending unit and the cluster, or it could be the instrument cluster itself. Of course good grounds come in to play with any electrical component.

It does not sound like a hard problem to troubleshoot if you have some experience with wiring diagrams and a good volt meter.

Good luck, Tom
