sport trac years to avoid?

if you have a sport trac how do you like it? i'm thinking of moving from my 93 ranger to a sport trac. i've heard some bad things about the sohc 4.0 in the explorers as far as the timing chains. are there certain years that this was corrected and they used an improved design? are there certain years to avoid with the sport trac? just starting to do my homework now. i'm looking to get something newer before winter.

4.0 SOHC motors had some improvement to the tensioner system in '03 or '04. However, they remain a trouble prone engine in that department. Some go well over 200k, some don't. One of the keys is clean oil. So if you find one you like, and it doesn't make a lot of noise and had good records on maintenance, you might be ok. 5 speed automatics have issues as well. Check for firm shifts. A flare between gears isn't the end, but isn't good either. Any other irregularities with the trans spell 4 digit trouble. (as in $x.000)

Rear axle bearings are noted trouble spots so listen for the howl. Front ball joints go a good ways but are a question after 100k.

Gas mileage won't be much different between the 6 and 8.

My 2007 4.6 leaks rain through the upper rear brake light. Another owner I know had the same issue- I guess a quick easy fix with a new gasket.
I also had the known issue of seized spark plugs in the head. I got them out with the Lisle extraction tool made for this job .
I currently have an exhaust leak where my headers meet the block. I guess it is a known issue of the bolts breaking. They need to be drilled out at $100 per bolt I was quoted.
The truck has 200 000 miles on it. I would say I am happy with it, and I would buy another- good luck with your purchase.
